Walker started the concert with a bang, opening with “What’s It to You” and follow ing it with his latest chart-topper, “Only on Days That End in Y.” day evening at The Woodlands offered more quality entertain- CLAY WALKER Lollapalooza. For real concert entertainment this past week, one didn’t need to drive all the way to Dallas. Fri- ment than a full day in Ferris. Walker was at his best, though, when he performed his soulful works, “This Woman and This Man,” and “Hypnotize the Moon.” In the encore, he showed The Eagles a thing or two with his rendition of “Desperado.” He established a good rapport with the audience, constantly collecting flow ers and stuffed animals from admiring fans. Since the audience knew most of his songs, the night was a sing-along; he even let the audience sing entire verses of some his songs, like “If I Could Make a Living.” Even though his act and music aren’t particularly revolutionary. Walker rep resents the best of new country. Com bining traditional country music with old rock and ’80s pop, new country’s ori gins span generations. Walker’s influences showed not only in his own music, but in the music he chose for his encore. In addition to “Des perado,” Walker sang “Sweet Home Al abama,” “Hound Dog,” “Great Balls of Fire,” and “Louie, Louie.” As a recent country convert, this was my first country concert. Sitting in the audience, watching everyone else and listening to the music al lowed me to reflect on why I and so many others pledge allegiance to Nashville, and not Seattle. First is its universal appeal. Entire families showed up to hear Walker, and 15-year-olds knew the songs as well as 55-year-olds. The reasons are simple themes and intelligible lyrics. Sure, “Who Needs You Baby” isn’t the deepest song, but it’s something people can relate to. It also helps that an interpreter is not required to decode the lyrics. Also, the music is pleasant to listen to. Let’s face it, Alanis Morissette has an ugly voice. Her songs sound ugly, and I can’t tell what she’s saying half the time. So many singers forget the concept of melody and tone. Fortunately, we have country as a salvation. Finally, country singers don’t take themselves too seriously. They know they won’t save the world; too bad Whit ney Houston hasn’t realized that. Their light-heartedness provides a nice con trast to the gloom-and-doom alternative whiners. Besides, it’s a little disingenu ous for multimillionares to proclaim they are “still just a rat in a cage.” Country singers (and songwriters) understand their role is to provide fun entertainment for their fans. They don’t need to be potty mouths, they don’t need to wallow in self-pity, and they don’t need to be humorless. All this rang true Friday night. Walker’s ear-to-ear grin remained all evening, and it reflected the content of all his music. Of course, the crowd at Clay Walker was a bit different from the people Lol lapalooza tends to draw. There weren’t many people displaying multiple body piercings and tattoos for the public to see. Plus, there weren’t zombies passed out from alcohol or some other sub stance at the Mitchell Pavilion. OK, I’ll confess, there were a few strange ones at the Walker concert. There was a thirtysomething woman sit ting three seats down from me wearing a pink bra-thing under an unbuttoned pink shirt. She was obviously too old to be wearing the bra-thing (if there is an appropriate age for that), and she gave me that “Hey, cutie” look/smile after Paul Brandt’s opening act. I politely re turned the smile, although I was really trying to stifle a laugh. Five minutes later, as a stranger passed in front of her to get to the aisle, she grabbed his butt. I didn’t leave my seat the rest of the concert. But all in all, I can’t complain about the concert.' People whine about the lack of variety of music shows around here. But the way I see it, the problem is the lack of quality entertainment in general. It’s a shame there isn’t more fun, wholesome music for everyone — not just the 18-23 alternative crowd — to enjoy. If only there were a mosh pit at Clay Walker’s concert, maybe more people would understand his and other country singers’ appeal.
