Astros’ pitching evolves
with addition of Darwin
WED
July 24,
HOUSTON (AP) — Pittsburgh
F*irates pitcher Danny Darwin, a
member of the Houston Astros
1986 National League champi
onship team, signed with the As
tros Tuesday.
The Astros acquired Darwin for
the stretch drive from the Pirates
in exchange for right-handed
pitcher Rich Loiselle, now with the
Astros’ Tucson Toros.
Darwin, 40, is the only
member of Houston’s 1986
National League Champi
onship Series team still
active in the majors.
It is a repeat of what
the Astros did in August 1986
when the team acquired Darwin
from Milwaukee. He went 5-2
with a 2.32 ERA in 12 games over
the final six weeks of the season
as Houston won the NL West Divi
sion by 10 games.
“We believe he can play a major
role in helping us win again this
year,” Astros General Manager
Gerry Hunsicker said.
Darwin, a Bonham native, has
a 3.02 ERA and a 7-9 recording
starts for the Pirates.
Also Tuesday, the Astros sip-
free agent right-hander Ter:
Clark after his release by KaiK
City. A clause in his contractt
lowed his release if a major leap
opportunity existed.
Clark started the 1996 seas
with the Royals but has pitched®
the club’s Triple A tea:
at Omaha since May. E
is 1-1 with a 7.79 ERA.
12 games for the Royal
and 3-1 with a 2.56 ER
in 16 games for Triple
Omaha.
To make room for Clark,!
July
;—
Astros sent outright to Tucson!
contract of right-handed pitek
John Johnstone. Johnstone has:
1-0 record with a 5.54 ERA and:
saves in nine relief appearance
for Houston.
Ixoiselle has a 2-2 record with:
2.43 ERA in five starts for Trip
A Tucson. He also made 16 star:
