Oftentimes, the wearing of a
David Robinson jersey will get
you inadvertently posted up on
your way to the library. You’d
better practice on your jump
hook before venturing outside
your apartment.
4) Don’t fall victim to the
theory that you inherit that
player’s athletic ability by don
ning his jersey.
This is an area that I have
fallen victim to many a time, es
pecially on the basketball court.
If I’m wearing Robert Horry’s
jersey, shouldn’t I be able to
throw down tomahawk jams and
drain 25-foot three-pointers?
Of course not! Putting on a
piece of fabric doesn’t change
the fact that I’m a slow white
guy with Bob Dole’s knees. It
gets even worse when I take
batting practice wearing my
vintage Braves’ Hank Aaron
jersey. Suddenly, I’m convinced
that by swinging as hard as
possible, I can take the ball out
of Bee Creek Park into the
Andy Anderson Arboretum. In
stead, I find myself face down
in the home plate dirt,
writhing in pain while I try to
count how many muscles I
have torn.
Reality bites.
Strawberry hitless in first game bad
NEW YORK (AP) — Darryl
Strawberry’s third comeback
began quietly, both on and off
the field.
There were no bombastic pro
nouncements of monster seasons.
And there were no hits, either.
Playing in the major leagues
for the first time since last Sep
tember, Strawberry went O-for-
4 Sunday in the New York Yan
kees’ 4-1 loss to the Milwaukee
Brewers. He lined out once,
grounded out twice and flied
out to the warning track in the
ninth inning.
“They were hacks and they
were good,” he said. “It just felt
good to be back.”
Maybe after all the tumult —
the cocaine use, the tax evasion
conviction, the failure to pay child
support and allegations of wife
beating — the 34-year-old out
fielder finally
has turned his
life around.
“I think St.
Paul was a
very humbling
experience for
me,” he said
before the
game, back in
the glare of
minicams and
photographers’
flashes. “It al-

Earlier in the day, he said he

WIMBLEDON, England (AP)
— Known until now only infa
mously at Wimbledon for a
chauvinistic wisecrack, Richard
Krajicek achieved a more lasting
and significant fame Sunday on
Centre Court when he seized his
first Grand Slam title.
The first Dutch player to cap
ture a major championship, and
the second unseeded player ever
to win Wimbledon, Krajicek
dealt out 14 qces, punishing
overheads and sizzling passing
shots to beat American MaliVai
Washington 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.
The match, between
two players who had
lost in the opening
round the past
two years, didn’t
equal that first
flourish of ex-
c i t e m e n t .
Though Kra
jicek played
well and Wash
ington tried hard,
there were too ^
many starts and
stops for either of them
to get into the flow and pro
duce the kind of majestic tennis
that occasionally has been seen
in men’s finals.
The match lasted 1 hour, 33
minutes of playing time, but
took 4 hours to complete because
of all the rain.
Krajicek, at 6-foot-5 the
tallest Wimbledon champion in
50 years, took advantage of his
imposing height and recently
beefed-up body to dominate
Washington from the net and
the baseline. Krajicek didn’t
reach the level he showed in
beating three-time defending
champion Pete Sampras in the
quarterfinals and 1991 cham
pion Michael Stich in the
fourth round.
On this day, it wasn’t necessary.
It was the first Wimbledon fi
nal between two unseeded play
ers, and Krajicek, 24, became
the only unseeded champion be
side Boris Becker in 1985. The
business of being unseeded,
though, deserves an asterisk.
Krajicek came into the tourna
ment ranked No. 13, and got
pushed out of the seedings be
cause of his past failures here.
When Thomas Muster, seeded
No. 7 despite a No. 2 ranking,
dropped out due to injury, Kra
jicek was slipped into his spot as
a sort of shadow 17th seed.
“I think next year I might get
a seed,” Krajicek said with a
wry smile.
On Sunday, one of
those watching at
Centre Court was
former Dutch
great Tom
Okker, who lost
in the final of
the 1968 U.S.
Open to Arthur
Ashe. Washing
ton was the first
black men’s finalist
at Wimbledon since
Ashe won in 1975.
Female streakei
bares all on
Centre Court
Krajicek’s victory was a
breakthrough for him after get
ting only as far as the semifinals
in two previous Grand Slam
events — the Australian Open in
1992 and French Open in 1993.
He never quite made it into the
elite ranks, but his victory en
sures that he will move back
into the top 10. He had been
ranked as high as No. 8 in 1993.
Krajicek dropped to his
knees, his arms in the air, his
fists clenched and a look of dis
belief on his face — then he fell
over backward.
“I was unbelievably happy,
and then when I did (fall over) I
felt, Ts the match really over?”’
he said. “For a split second I
thought, ‘Am I making a fool of
myself?’ But then nobody started
laughing too much, so I thought
I won.”
WIMBLEDON, England (AP
— A young female streaker,
wearing a big smile and little
else, pranced across Centre
Court moments before Sunday)
men’s Wimbledon final.
The woman, identified only
as a 23-year-old student from
London, climbed over a barrier
at one end of the court and then
dashed the length of its periph
ery — passing in front of final
ists Richard Krajicek and Mali
Vai Washington as they posed
near the net for photographs.
The streaker was topless
and wore only a tiny maid
apron, which she lifted up. She
was quickly escorted off the
court near the Royal Box
two policemen.
Both players broke into
laugher, as did most of fhe
14,000 fans.
Washington paused a mo
ment and then doubled over try
ing to contain his laughter
Walking back to the baseline to
begin his warmup, the American
lifted up his tennis shirt to bare
his own chest and received a
large ovation.
The woman was taken to
Wimbledon police station where
she was due to be held until the
end of the match.
Usually stiff and proper, The
All England club was unexpect
edly light-hearted regarding
the moment.
“Whilst we do not wish to
condone the practice, it did at
least provide some light amuse
ment for out loyal and patient
supporters, who have had a try
ing time during the recent bad
weather,” a club statement said.

ATLANTA (AP) — Fred Mc-
Griff hit his first homer in 16
days and Greg Maddux won for
the fourth time in five starts as
the Atlanta Braves routed the
Astros 9-1 Sunday.
McGriff’s homer was his
20th of the season, the 10th
year in a row he has reached
that level.
Maddux (9-6), going to the
All-Star break with an outside
chance to win his fifth straight

runners. He came out after the
sixth with Atlanta comfortably
ahead on a blistering afternoon.
Rookie Donne Wall (6-1) lost
for the first time since he was
called up from the minors May
14, lasting only three innings in
his shortest start of the season.
Wildness was his biggest prob
lem as he walked four and bare
ly threw more strikes (37) than
balls (34).
