For the second year, Bryan-
College Station will host the
1996 Whataburger Southwest
Shootout Basketball Tourna
ment to be held this weekend
and July 11 to 14.
This is the largest girls bas
ketball tournament of its type
in the state.
The tournament originated
10 years ago when Gordon
Loucks, a Corpus Christi resi
dent, saw a need for a tourna
ment high school girls could
play in.
Lynn Hickey, the sports com
mittee chair and A&M associ
ate athletic director, said the
event made a huge impact on
the community last year and
was highly successful.
“This is a great opportunity
for girls in Texas,” Hickey said.
“They are guaranteed three to
four games and it is a great
chance for recruiters to see
players such as Lisa Branch,
Martha McClelland and Kelly
Cerny have participated in
this tournament.
This week-

these players.
“It brings in a lot of money to
the town and gives us a chance to
show off Bryan-College Station.”
Several teams of high-school-
age girls tour in the summer,
and the Southwest Shootout is
just one of many stops.
Hickey said Texas A&M

coaching staff.
“I’ve talked to the coaches about the decision
and they are aware that I am leaving,” Kevin said.
“A&M is a great school and it gave me the better
opportunity when I first got here. Coach Ens-
minger has always been great to me, and I never
had any problems with him whatsoever.”
"I know he (Kevin Colon) would have
had a chance to make a difference."

weekend, over 100 recruiters
will descend upon the tourna
ment to view the 160 partici
pating teams.
“This is a great opportunity
for people to see the kids play
and for the players to get a lot
of games under their belt,”
Hickey said.

Neither A&M nor TCU officials could be
reached on Tuesday to confirm the transfer.
Senior wide receiver Albert Connell expressed
disappointment in Kevin’s departure.
“It will be bad because he is a good quarter
back,” Connell said. “He’s probably leaving be
cause of his brother. I know he would have had a
chance to make a difference.
“I didn’t see it coming, and I worked out with
Kevin just about every day.”
Chris Colon, an A&M reserve at safety and line
backer for three seasons, will be looking for a new
place to play in the fall.
“I have been released by the team and I will be
transferring in the fall,” Chris said. “That’s all I
have to say about it at this time.”
The brothers had no comment on whether their
departures are related.

Battalion file phot:
Former Aggie Typail McMullen tackles LSU tail
back Kendall Cleveland during a 1995 game.
Rangers need to avoid
perennial swan dive in ’96
I f you are a
Ranger’s
fan, it’s
probable that
during the sea
son you have
been having
prophetic vi
sions of reach
ing postseason
play for the
first time in
team history.
Texas is
definitely
making a good argument that
this is the year they won’t be a
disappointment.
After 81 games, the Rangers
lead the American League West
by six games and have held first
place for 74 consecutive days, ty
ing the 1994 team record.
They are playing 17 games
above .500 (49-32), defeating
contenders Baltimore, New York
and Cleveland.
The Rangers definitely feel
at home in The Ballpark at Ar
lington. Their home record is
an amazing 31-12, the best in
the majors.
Keeping true to tradition,
Texas bats are the doom of
pitchers across the league. The
team leads the league with a
.296 batting average, amassing
more than 100 homeruns and
470 runs batted in.
It also appears General Man
ager Doug Melvin has put quali
ty talent on the mound as he
promised. All five starting
pitchers are posting numbers
that easily surpass the past rag-
arm rotations of Texas. Their
combined record is 41-21 and all
have at least seven wins.
Mike Henneman has been
good and bad. He is among the
league leaders with 21 saves,
but his 0-6 record and ERA of
7.00 suggest inconsistencies far
from desired in a team’s closer.
Still, the Rangers are win
ning, and the fans of Arlington
are driving to The Ballpark in
herds. The average attendance
so far is 34,153 people — up 22
percent from last year.
However, anyone who has fol
lowed the Rangers in years past
knows torrid starts like this
year’s are typical, and they al
ways seem to fade after the All-
Star break.
The Rangers were in first
place at the All-Star break in
1991, but finished the season
in third place, 10 games out of
the lead.
In 1993 they were one game
out of first at the All-Star break,
but by season’s end they were
eight games behind.
Last year Texas held a 39-30
record at the break, but fell out
of the pennant race by mid-Sep
tember. They finished third be
hind Seattle and California, go
ing 35-40 in the second half of
the season.
For the Rangers to finally win
a pennant this year, they must
do three things they haven't
done in the past and have
proved to be their downfall:
1) Win consistently at home
For the first two years in the new
stadium their record was 72-63.
A championship caliber
team should dominate at home
and not barely scrape above
the .500 mark. This year, how
ever, the Rangers have im
proved in this area, establish
ing themselves as the rulers of
their own turf.
2) They must beat their divi
sion rivals.
Texas has only played nine
of its games against the West
ern division teams and is 5-4,
The rest of the season will be
filled with division games,
Hopefully they will do better
than they did in ’95, when they
posted a 18-21 record in the
West.
3) Texas must simply refuse
to fade in the second half of
this season.
They must overcome obstacles
including injuries, poor attitudes
and the Texas heat that often
both players and critics have cit
ed as reasons for failure in the
years past.
The All-Star break is next
week, and Texas is in first
place playing like a division
champion. Of course, we have
seen this before.
Good teams know how to win
when it counts, and only their
performance through the next
and final three months will
show us if the Rangers have
what it takes to win its first
pennant ever.
Angels down Henneman, Rangers 6-5
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Reliever Mike Henne
man allowed the tying run to score when he threw
wildly to first, then threw a wild pitch that enabled
Rex Hudler to score the winning run in the California
Angels’ 6-5 victory over Texas on Tuesday night.
The Angels, 0-37 when trailing after eight in
nings, were behind 5-4 when Darin Erstad beat
out an infield single to open the ninth. Henneman
replaced Ed Vosberg, and Hudler, who homered
earlier, bunted down the first-base line.
Henneman fielded the ball and tossed wildly to
first, allowing Erstad to score and sending Hudler
to third.
Garret Anderson and Tim Salmon were then in
tentionally walked to load the bases before Hudler
scored when Henneman threw in the dirt and the
ball rolled past Ivan Rodriguez to the backstop.
Mike James (5-3) got the win, retiring all four
batters he faced. Henneman (0-6) blew his sixth
save opportunity in 27 chances, and his ERA re
mained at 7.00.
Juan Gonzalez homered his first two times up for
Texas, driving in five runs to give him nine RBIs in
two games, but the Rangers couldn’t hold on.
Texas starter Ken Hill gave up four runs, three
earned, on nine hits in six innings.
Boskie went seven-plus innings, allowing five
runs on seven hits. He struck out nine and
walked one.
After Gonzalez gave Texas a 3-0 lead in the
first, Hudler got two of those back with his 11th
homer, a two-run shot in the bottom of the first.
