The Texas A&M University Development
Foundation raises money each year to help
support academic and departmental pro
grams, faculty enhancement funds and
scholarships for students.
Gifts to the Development Foundation
totaled $35 million last year. About $20
million of the money was given to the
University in the form of endowments.
The Development Foundation is a pri
vate, non-profit corporation whose mis
sion is to direct major gift fundraising
and asset management to educational
excellence at A&M.
State funds have been cut in past
years. Dr. Eddie J. Davis, president of
the Development Foundation, said gifts
to the foundation supplement the dimin
ished state funding.
“It (raised money) does help keep the
cost of education down for students,”
Davis said. “A large amount goes to
scholarships for students.”
Last year $5.5 million went to
scholarships.
“In a real way it helps students who
can’t pay for their education,” Davis said.
The Development Foundation also helps
professors. Chairs and professorships re
ceived a total allocation of $400,000.
Another $13.3 million supported academic
programs, while $300,000 went to institu
tional development.
The Development Foundation handles
endowments and gifts over $20,000. For

the Development Foundation. Most gifts
to the foundation are restricted.
“A vast majority is restricted by the
donor,” Davis said.
tion, said gifts to the foundation are
vested through asset management.
“A team of external investment profes
sionals invests the gifts to make sim
their value isn’t deflated,” Thomas said
“They (the investments) are fairlj
conservative. About 60 percent is
stocks and 40 percent is in bonds.”
Dwight Look, Class of ’43, donated
total of $52 million to the University
over a period of several years.
Look’s donation was restricted. Tli!
money he gave will help update the com
puter system at Evans Library and i
prove the College of Engineering. I
said he gave to A&M because he be
lieved the University would benefitmos:
from his donation.
“I hoped to further education at the
school I have the most respect for,
Look said.
The foundation’s Capture the Spiri
Campaign began in August,
with the goal of raising $500 million
The campaign will wrap up in Augusl
and has already exceeded the goal
Davis said the foundation plansto
continue raising money through different
mini-campaigns.
“We’re going to have to continue raising
money,” Davis said.

Students looking for books may want to
avoid the West Campus Library. Hardcover
books are few and far between in the state-
of-the-art facility.
The West Campus Library offers electron
ic information for the College of Business
Administration, the Graduate School of
Business and the College of Agriculture and
Life Sciences.
Jane Dodd, head of the West Campus Li
brary, said materia] is constantly updated
for patrons.
“Our objective is to provide access to ma
terials that meet the needs of the faculty,
staff and students on West Campus,” Dodd
said. “This is done with electronic resources
and document delivery requested from the
Evans Library.”
Dodd said people seem to appreciate the
West Campus Library, which will celebrate
its second birthday this fall.
With up-to-date journals and periodicals
and one of the biggest computer labs on cam
pus, students and faculty have many oppor
tunities to access materials.
“People come completely confident with
high expectations that they will find what
they need,” Dodd said.
Anne Coleman, a junior accounting major,
said she likes the West Campus Library be
cause its location is convenient when study
ing for tests.
“Being over there is easier to study be
cause it is close to my classes,” Coleman
said. “The environment is more conducive to
studying.”
Dr. Fred Heath, the dean and director of
Evans Library, said A&M is spending ap
proximately $90 million over a five-year pe
riod on library construction — more that
any other U.S. university.
“We are at a watershed in publishing
now,” Heath said. “Companies are beginning
to let go of print and change to electronics,
although print artifacts remain critical for
some.”
Heath said computers at Evans are dras
tically being changed.
"Over the next two years there will be a
significant migration from print to electron
ics,” Heath said. “We find the higher educa
tion committee tends to prefer electronic re
sources.”
Pay and staff lots are available near the
West Campus Library to accommodate stu
dents in addition to the campus shuttle bus.
