SINGING
By April Towery
The Battalion
• co
For 13 days in May,
50 members of the
Singing Cadets spread
the spirit of Aggieland
from Washington, D.C.,
to New York City.
The cadets sang at
historic places such as
Carnegie Hall, the Statue
of Liberty, the World Trade
Center, the Kennedy Center
and on the U.S. Capitol steps.
Performing at Carnegie Hall
and the Kennedy Center was spe
cial for the Singing Cadets be
cause it was the first time they
had performed at these places.
The trip was funded by the
Singing Cadets’ earlier perfor
mances and compact disc sales, in
addition to a gift from the Associa
tion of Former Students and the vice
president for Student Affairs.
Robert Reed, tour manager and a se
nior environmental design major, said
he enjoyed singing at Carnegie Hall.
“I just kept thinking of who all had been on
this stage before,” he said. “It was a neat experi
ence for me because I’d never been to New York
and I got the opportunity to go with Singing
Cadets and enjoy it with a lot of my friends.”
Reed said he also enjoyed touring in
Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.
“We sang at the Christ Church in
Philadelphia, then the next day we went to
the National Cathedral in D.C.,” Reed said.
“Singing outside the U.S. Capitol was really a
thrill. It was so neat being that close to so
many important people.”
The Singing Cadets received quite a bit of
mail regarding their performance in Wash
ington, D.C.
“One little girl told her mother she had a
crush on a particular guy who sang a solo,”
said Singing Cadets Director David Kipp.
“She wants to go to A&M when she gets old
enough, and she’s already asked her parents
to move to Texas so she can be closer to the
Singing Cadets and Texas A&M.”
The Singing Cadets also attended the Arling
ton National Cemetery with President Bill Clin
ton on Memorial Day, but only as observers.
Kipp said he has had a great first year af-
T S
ter replacing former director Bob Boone, who
retired after 35 years.
“It’s been a fun year, and at the same time a
challenge to follow someone like Bob Boone,"
Kipp said. “The guys have been really flexible
in adapting to a different personality and style,
I couldn’t ask for anything better.”
Kipp said the trip to New York was special
because the cadets only make an end-of-year
trip every two to three years.
One of the Singing Cadets per
formances was on CBS’s “This
Morning with Mark McEwen.”
“McEwen really ate it
up,” Kipp said. “He would
say, ‘Watch this,’ to the
audience and then say
something about
A&M and all the
cadets would
whoop. He really
enjoyed having
the power to
make people
whoop on
command."
Jason
Jones, trip
chairman and a
senior biomed
ical science ma
jor, said orga
nizing the trip
was enjoyable,
“Singing Cadets
gives you ... opportunities to spread the spiritol
Aggieland,” Jones said. “There’s nothing like it’
The Singing Cadets will not practice this
summer, but the cadets here for summer
school are recruiting freshmen.
Reed said the singers have a special bond.
“You get to be really close friends with all
the guys,” Reed said. "Everyone has a lot of
love for A&M. That’s our bond.”
Tim Angle, a junior political science major,
said the trip to New York and singing at
Carnegie Hall were unbelievable experiences.
“The camaraderie makes it all worth
while,” Angle said. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime
thing.”Kipp said the cadets received mail
commending them on their patriotism and in
spiring performances.
“One of my favorite things ... is sharing our
time and Aggie spirit,” Reed said. “It’s neat to
see the reactions of former students, but also
from people who have never heard of A&M.”

Continued from Page 3
space and we’re always working
or going to school so we hardly
ever see each other.”
Dima said having other room
mates keeps them from being so
isolated away from campus and
relieves marital tension because
they can talk to another room
mate as a third party.
In the fall, Dima and Mike
said they will live on their own.
“The main reason is for priva
cy — you don’t have to worry
about people coming and going
all the time,” Mike said.
Dima said she is looking for
ward to trivial roommate dis
putes dissipating and getting
back to life with her husband.
“It’s not an easy decision. And
if someone wants to get married
while in school, they should real
ly think about it,” Dima said.
Court Sansom, a freshman bi
ology major, lives off campus,
but is single.
Sansom said he lived off cam
pus his first year due to lack of
availability of residence halls
and fear of a bad roommate.
“Affordability was definitely
my number-one priority,” he
said. “I used the list of apart
ments that I got at registration.”
Sansom said after signing a
lease to an apartment, there was
an adjustment period he had to
go through.
“It wasn’t too bad,” he said,
“because I moved in before
school, but it got tough when I
realized I was here by myself
and had to get used to taking
personal responsibility.”
Sansom said many students
move off campus for the wrong
reasons and should consider all
of the pros and cons before mak
ing a decision.
“I’m sure that students think
this is going to be a lot of fun and
stuff with partying and all,” he
said, “but I don’t think people re
alize the extra responsibility of
cooking and cleaning up after
yourself more than in the dorms.”
Sansom said being single cer
tainly does not ease the pressure
of living off campus, rather it
makes a big difference on one’s
whole outlook.
“You have to be totally pre
pared for your entire day when
you walk out the door,” he said,
“It’s a lot harder to keep in touch
with campus life, and you’re not
going to meet as many people.”
Sansom said being single and
living off campus is a paradox to
“normal student life.”
“There’s no common ground be
tween on and off campus,” he said,
“especially when you’re single, it
almost inhibits your social life.”
Sansom will go from being
single to having a roommate in
the fall.
“I usually savor time by my
self, but there are times when
human interaction is definitely
healthy,” he said.
Sansom said he does not ex
pect as much quiet time, but he
does not think the change will be
for the worse.
