Brewers pound Rangers, 14 4 A&M football looks to greener pastures in ‘96
ARLINGTON, (AP) — John
Jaha had four hits and four RBIs
and Milwaukee starter Ben Mc
Donald survived a shaky outing
as the Brewers pounded out 20
hits to beat Texas 14-4 Tuesday
night, snapping the Rangers’
four-game winning streak.
McDonald (6-3) improved his
career mark against Texas to 6-1
despite giving up five hits in the
first two innings, escaping with
only one run.
The Brewers battered
Rangers starter Ken Hill (7-6)
for a career-high nine runs over
3 2-3 innings, inflating his ERA
from 2.94 to 3.66.
McDonald lasted 5 2-3 innings
and allowed 12 hits and four
runs, including a two-run homer
by Rene Gonzales and an RBI sin
gle by Ivan Rodriguez in the sixth
that capped the scoring.
Dave Nilsson added three
RBIs for the Brewers, who have
beaten the Rangers in three of
the last five meetings.

“During their road trips
across Texas together, his
brother Joe Bill had always
made a point of showing Mike
the great football baronies of
Texas — Texas A&M, the Uni
versity of Texas, Baylor. ‘Hey if
you work hard, you can go here,’
Joe Bill told him.”
Friday Night Lights — H.G.
Bissinger
A legendary quarterback at
perennially powerful Odessa
Permian High School, Mike
Winchell did just that. As his
four school passing records indi
cate, Winchell did not slack off.
Despite his stellar play,
however, Winchell was not of
fered a single scholarship, and
his aspiration to play major
college football in Texas failed
to materialize.
Although Winchell’s story is
a sad one, his dream is reminis
cent of the desires of current
football recruits across the na
tion. Those desires captivate
universities into spending mil
lions on a yearly basis to up
grade their stadiums, making
Shane Elkins, The Battauon
Natural grass covers the playing surface at Kyle Field for the first time
in 26 years. The project was completed last month.
sure they alone attract the best
athletes.
A&M is no exception. With
the onset of the 1996 football
season and the opening of the
Big 12 Conference only 73 days
away, advances are being made
daily to improve the school’s
football “barony.”
A new grass playing surface
at Kyle Field and a $3 million,
state-of-the-art Diamond Vision
Display System have been in
stalled to help give A&M a
boost in recruiting and fan en
tertainment during games.
The grass field, completed in
late May, was the first in a
number of changes and im
provements being made within
the athletic department to help
advance the football program
into the future.
The field is mowed at least
three times a week and is con
tinually fed fertilizer. In addi
tion, a new irrigation system
should keep the grass safe
from continuing drought condi
tions. A&M’s use of pea gravel
and a mixture of Irish peat
moss and gravel for the root
zone will help to drain Kyle
Field in two to three hours
when the field is irrigated.
Following a new trend
sweeping college football, the
new playing surface was a move
away from artificial turf. Al
though considered “faster” than
natural grass, turf has long
been attributed to the shorten
ing of athletes’ careers because
of the ease of injuring and tear
ing muscles and tendons in the
lower body — especially run
ning backs, receivers, and de
fensive backs, who do a great
amount of turning and cutting
during play.
In spite of this, though, A&M
Athletic Trainer Mike Ricke
said he believes it is unfair to
make a judgement call on
whether or not it is turf that
usually causes injury.
“AstroTurf has caused prob
lems, but there are many other
factors taken into consideration
with athletic injuries,” Ricke
said. “With some guys, injuries
just happen. In other cases, if
the player gets enough
torque on the ACL while cut
ting, then an injury is likely
to occur no matter what sur
face they are on.”
Starting senior defensive
back Donovan Greer missed
most of last season due to a se
rious knee injury that occurred
while playing on artificial turf.
“It’s hard to say if the per
centage of knee and ankle in
juries will drop when we move
onto grass,” Ricke said. “We’ve
been playing on grass since
1970, so it’s hard to compare
since there are so many differ
ences now from 26 years ago.”
In another improvement be
ing made to Kyle Field in time
for the beginning of the 1996
season, A&M is taking the lead
into the future with the addi
tion of the new Diamond Vision
Display System.
At a Board of Regents meet
ing on Friday, May 24, a li
censing contract was awarded
to GameDay Sports Program
ming Network to install the
system. The new 20-by-27-foot
video screen, much like the
ones at Texas Stadium and the
Astrodome, is a Sony Jum-
botron System.
It will allow fans to see in
stant replays and close-up
views of the events that make
game day at Kyle Field mem
orable.
A&M Athletic Director Wally
Groff initiated the new screen
project, which is included in
Phase Three of a four-phase
athletic facilities overhaul.
“This new screen will bring
A&M to the forefront of enter
tainment and recruiting,” Groff
said. “Not only in the Big 12,
but across the nation as well."
The system is quoted at a
price of $3 million, but in the
contract set up with Game Day
A&M will break even in the
process, eventually having the
chance to make money from it.
"For the first 10 years of use,
all the money made in advertis
ing with the screen will go to
paying for the system," Groff
said. "Any money after that will
be a profit for A&M."
