Vallone said she is outraged
at accusations associating the
group with revisionism.
“I think it’s very wrong-head
ed,” Vallone said. “Oftentimes
when people talk about revision
ism, they talk about the Holo
caust never happening. They are
saying a tragic thing in history
never happened. To be called
that is really an insult and com
pletely inaccurate.”
Howard Marchitello, an assis
tant professor of English, also
said he can not believe the group
is being affiliated with the revi
sionism concept.
“I think it’s ungrounded,”
Marchitello said. “No one has
demonstrated that’s the case. I
think the burden of proof lies
with the regents. They need to
explain what they mean by those
terms. They sort of let that
statement float without explain
ing it. I was shocked that they
would make a political issue out
of an academic one.”
The dispute over the center has
become a question of academic free
dom to supporters of the center.
Reynolds said the regents are
determining what can be re
searched and what can not.
“It sounds as if it is history
they do not like,” Reynolds said.
“This is what researchers do:
Come up with new ideas. If you
deny scholarship, you deny acade
mic freedom and you go against a
basic concept of a university. The
statements they have made indi
cate they wish to proscribe a cer
tain kind of research. This does
not seem connected to an academ
ic evaluation of the proposal.”
McClure said the regents are
not trying to infringe on acade
mic freedom.
“Ultimately it is the regents’
responsibility to protect academ
ic freedom and to have responsi
bility for all curriculum in all in
stitutions within the system,”
McClure said. “Our responsibili
ty is to give final approval short
of the coordinating board at all
of the institutions in the A&M
system,” he continued.
Despite the rejection of the
proposal, the IGHLS is plan
ning to continue sponsoring
programs and activities related
to the humanities.

the producers of the Lollapplooza.”
Time is running out for the producers to contact the
county about putting on the festival. The Mass Gathering
Act of Texas requires a permit for events attracting large
crowds so health, safety and law enforcement arrange
ments can be made.
The request for such a permit must be made 45 days
before the event takes place. This leaves the producers of
the festival only ten days to submit their application. A
new rumor around town is that the producers will apply
for a permit in Austin.
A spokesman for Pace Concerts, which was originally
responsible for bringing Lollapalooza to College Station,
said a move to Austin is possible and that all dates are
unconfirmed.
However, according to Dr. Southerland, the ^ ar
committee does not make the final decision, Texas
