NEW MUSIC TO SINGE B-CS
SCENE THIS SUMMER
By April Towery
The Battalion
M usic is hot this summer,.
with a variety of new al
bums and local shows.
In addition to the Metallica re
lease last Sunday, Beck, Jack-
opierce, Alice In Chains, Clint
Black, Jimmy Buffett, Blues
Traveler and Lyle Lovett will pro
vide some new summer tunes.
Allan Seale, the manager of
Disc Go Round, said it is rumored
Pearl Jam will also release a new
album this summer.
Seale also said it appears
vinyl is quickly becoming a pop
ular music trend for the sum
mer of ’96.
Dale Stanley, a senior math
major and music consultant at
Hastings, said a mellow music
is becoming more popular in
the Brazos Valley is more mel
low music.
“People are going a lot lighter,
not so much banging their heads
against the wall,” Stanley said.
“The Tracy Chapman sound is be
coming popular again.”
However, Keith Randolph, a
senior environmental design ma
jor, said alternative music still
has a large audience.
“Alternative is getting more
popular and going farther, not
slacking at all,” Randolph said.
Seale said classic rock is making
a comeback as well.
“With the KISS reunion com
ing up, everyone is starting to
listen to the classics again,”
Seale said.
Although Bryan-College Sta
tion is not the music capital of
the world, it will host its share
of concerts this summer. In ad
dition to Lollapalooza, there
will be smaller shows offered
more fre
quently.
Verti
go, a
club
nights to see if the punk trends
catches on.
“Vertigo will be hosting mostly
punk rock bands on Monday or
Wednesday nights, the off nights,
but probably not on the week
ends,” he said.
Chris Penn, the manager of
Marooned, said he is working
on bringing bands such as Jars
of Clay and Brainiac to Ag-
gieland.
“Once we can see how
the shows are going at
Vertigo,” “we’ll
book some more
bands,” he said.
“Right now
there’s few
places for
them to play.”
In addition
to the local
o n
North-
gate, will be
hosting some local
punk bands to see if
the sound system works well
with their style.
Brett Bulen, an employee at
Vertigo, said they will begin to
showcase punk bands on week-
shows,
there will be several
concerts nearby, such as
Horde Fest in Austin and the
KISS Reunion at the Summit
in Houston.
Stanley said although the mu
sic industry competes against the
Randolph said.
The music business is picking
up and should continue to be hot
throughout the summer. The new
music and nearby concerts, will
keep students busy and allow
them to enjoy the summer with a
variety of new sounds.

O K , I
know
what
you’re think
ing right
now: “it’s
@$%!# hot
down here!"
And yes,
you’re right.
It is @$%!#
hot down
here. But the
thrill of liv-

ing in College Station for the
next three months should over
ride the heat. Right? Hey! You
still with me? OK just get a cup
of water, you’ll be all right.
Good. Now, speaking as
someone who is spending his
second summer at Texas A&M,
I can say there are two steps to
having a really great time.
First of all (and please do
these steps in order), don’t get
heat stroke and second, don’t
skip class like you did in the
fall (unless of course you have
heat stroke, then refer back to
step one).
Once you realize you can
make the proper adjustments to
summer sojourning in College
Station, you’ll be fine. There are
numerous advantages to this
once-in-a-lifetime (or for some,
five-or-six-times-in-a-lifetime)
experience.
You should have already not
ed the most significant of these
experiences is more parking and
less people.
Yes, summertime is the time
for parking ticket Redemption.
Here is your opportunity to prove
to Mom and Pop that you have
become responsible and
realized the woes of
those extraordi-

that

on your

Anoth
er reason
summer
in Bryan-
College
Station is
so much fun
is because
the semes
ters are
shorter.
Forget
that each
class is
now equal
to roughly 13
weeks of regular
semester classes,
and if you
miss one
day,
....,, you
may as well have missed your
own wedding. Put it out of your
mind that mid-terms will come
much more frequently usually
at the rate of about two per
hour. You can dismiss the fact
that what is written in the class
schedule guide as a one-and-a-
half-hour class will seem in re
ality like merely four hours.
Don’t worry about any of this.
Realize that you can get credit
for up to 14 hours in about ten
days. Pretty amazing, huh?
Most of all, who can forget
about Lollapalooza coming to
the Texas World Speedway in
July? You can attempt to enjoy
your favorite bands while dodg
ing flying bleacher seats, mud
clumps and people.
So who says school has to take
all the fun out of summer? College
Station may not have a beach, but
there’s always Wolf Pen Creek.
There may not be nearby access
to a Six Flags or Astroworld, but
who can complain about the trav
eling carnivals at Manor East
Mall (“Eight tickets to not have to
go on this ride!”).
Hey! Are you paying atten
tion? Oh, God! Water, quick!
Don’t just stand there, you’re
going to pass out! Okay, every
thing cool? Good.
Remember, it’s really @$%!#
hot down here!

Right For Me! Right For You!
After having my second son I could not lose the weight I had gained during pregnancy. No matter whar I did, it seemed like 1
was never going to fit into my "pre-pregnancy” clothes. I tried exercising at home, "but it is very hard to stay motivated when
you are exercising by ygurself At my first visit to Jazzerdse Cathy encouraged me to give it a chance, and not to be discouraged
when I didn’t see immediate results. Cathy also tnftjrmed me that it would take about 6 to 8 weeks to see a significant differ
ence. Well, I stuck to Jazzerdse and have been gprng steadily about a year now. It seemed like the more I went the more I want
ed to go. 1 have met lots of people, had a lot of fun and, hey, I lost about 33 to 33 pounds! It was work to lose the weight, but
it jitst seemed like “play” instead. Jazzerdse offers different types of classes with such a variety of music, so you never get bored.
1 am so pleased with the results ofjazzercise. I have gone from a size 11 to a size 5! That’s 4 1/2 inches off my thighs and 9 inch
es off my waist! Jazzerdse has shown me drat exercising doesn’t have to be a chore. As long as I am able I will be Jazzerdstng!
Cathy can sign me up for life! ,hl , I.

movie industry in the summer,
the music business does not seem
to be suffering.
“Soundtracks do become more
popular in the summer,” he said.
“But because this is a college
town, there are fewer people here
in the summer, and thus less de
mand for music. New music is of
ten released at Christmas time,
whereas summer is more of a
time for new movie releases.”
Seale said sales at Disc Go
Round business has picked up in
the past few days, however, since
many students have come back
for summer school.
“I think we do better over
the summer when the students
are here than we do in the
spring,” he said.
Although there are fewer peo
ple in town over the summer,
business seems to be doing okay,
