software program to determine if this problem is
occurring.
“I have the software makers saying it will
search through all three,” he said. “But I hear so
many complaints from students that it makes me
wonder.”
Ferguson and members of the manufacturing
engineering technology department met with Ca
reer Center officials April 12 to discuss possible
system improvements. Dr. John Mayer, manu
facturing engineering technology program direc
tor, and Dr. Jorge Leon, a professor in manufac
turing engineering technology, attended the
meeting.
Ferguson said the Career Center gave the de
partment three suggestions to rectify the prob
lem:
• The Career Center will try to combine ob
scure majors with better-known related majors
and create a single code for both majors.
• The Career Center will attempt to change
the manufacturing engineering technology code
so that it is not confused with other major codes,
such as maintenance.
• They will send companies a description of
all the majors and their codes.
Payne said Career Center officials will begin
developing these solutions this summer.
“I think an annotated list of majors and their
descriptions will be a great benefit to the em
ployers,” he said. “I think this is a legitimate
project to tackle this summer.”
Mayer said that though there are problems
with the system, he does not believe the Career
Center is entirely at fault.
“Two things are wrong with the system,” he
said. “The students aren’t aware they are re
stricted when interviewing with companies
based on the major code they enter first, and the
Career Center needs to iron out some of the
problems to allow students to sign up for inter
views with companies that don’t request their
specific major.”
