1996 NBA Playoff Preview
The Spurs and Rockets have moved practice to
their Texas retreats to prepare for the playoffs
KERRVILLE, Texas (AP) —
The Spurs want to think only
about beating Phoenix. So to es
cape distractions before the play
offs they’ve headed again to a fa
vorite Hill Country haunt.
The Spurs practiced intensely
this week in Kerrville, 60 miles
northwest of San Antonio, where
their few diversions have been
golf, fishing and waiting in line
to eat at the brand new Luby’s
cafeteria.
‘We really got a lot accom
plished,” said Spurs coach Bob
Hill. “I don’t think it could have
gone much better.”
Hill wanted his team in a
“playoff camp” and away from
family, visiting friends and rela
tives and large numbers of fans
before facing the Suns in a best-
of-5 first-round series starting
Friday at the Alamodome.
The Spurs, who have held
training camps and playoff camps
in Kerrville before, planned to re
turn home Thursday.
“It’s been good here,” David
Robinson said Wednesday after
practice at Schreiner College. “It’s
been quiet. We’ve been able to fo
cus in on the things we need to fo
cus on. I think now we’re ready.”
San Antonio defeated Phoenix

during the regular season. But

that I was catching confetti off
one of the fire trucks at the
Houston Rockets’ victory parade.
Of course, when you’re scour
ing the country for a sporstwrit-
ing job as graduation looms
near — time, can fly.
But, back to basketball.
As you can plainly see a little
further down the page, the Rock
ets have set themselves up in
less-than-perfect position for the
NBA’s second season.
Nothing less than another
miracle run through the playoffs
will result in the end of -the
championship reign in Houston.
Can the Rockets do it again?
Well, it ain’t called Clutch
City for nothing.
It won’t be easy this year, but
who has ever won a champi
onship by slacking off?
