Chris Torn carries on family legacy
By Kristina Buffin
The Battalion
M ost A&M students choose Aggieland
because a family member attended
the University and they want to car
ry on the legacy.
However, senior yell leader Chris Torn
has taken it a step further. Torn is the third
member of his family to be elected as head
yell leader. Torn’s father, Sam, was head yell
leader in 1969-70, and his brother, Scott,
was head yell leader in 1993-94.
Torn, a junior business administration
major, said he has piloted his life after his
father and brother.
“I don’t know any family closer,” Torn
said. “They are here almost every weekend,
and they travel together to see my sister.
Family is a big priority.”
A panel selected Tom last Tuesday after
interviewing all three senior yell leaders,
Torn, Gary Kipe and Jimbo Cross.
Torn said being selected as a yell leader is
the ultimate, in terms of leading the A&M
student body.
“My grandfather, father and Scott were
all yell leaders, and I have only seen positive
things come out of their lives,” Torn said.
“Personally, I enjoy being in a leadership po
sition. I live, eat and sleep A&M, so there is
no better position to be in.”
Although the Torn family is rich in A&M
history, Sam Tom said he did not pressure ei
ther one of his sons to follow in his footsteps.
“We are definitely an A&M family,” he
said, “but I encouraged both of them to look
at other universities. If they decided on
A&M, I would hope it was because it was
best for them, not the best for their dad.”
Like most fathers, Sam Torn is proud of
his sons and is happy they have found a way
to have the best college experience.
“My wife and I thought it is important to
get the full college experience,” he said. “Col
lege is more than just going to class.
“I am proud of my sons for what they have
accomplished. I think they have been blessed,
had some luck and have worked hard.”
Originally, Chris Torn wanted to walk
onto the football team, but at the last
minute, he decided to join the Corps of
Cadets. Torn said being a junior yell leader
this year was one of his best experiences.
“To be a yell leader is one of the greatest
honors,” he said. “Being the head yell leader
is just something extra.
“It was everything I expected and more. It
was the best year, and I made some of the
best friends.”
Torn said the highlight of this year was
the Texas game. He said although A&M was
“outscored,” he thought the camaraderie of
the student body was “awesome.”
“Just to see the 12th man and having yell

practice after the game was great,” he said.
“If it was any other school, people would
probably have already left the game. Right
then, everyone was together, and you could
see a tear in everyone’s eye.”
Right now, the newly elected yell leaders
are getting together and discussing plans for
next year. Tom said his biggest goal is to ed
ucate the Big 12 schools on A&M traditions.
“My big thing next year is to educate the
Big 12 on how unique A&M is,” he said. “The
other schools better get used to it or go away.
“I want to create a positive atmosphere
with the yell leaders, and we are looking
forward to our best year.”
Although Torn is the only remaininf
member of this year’s group of yell leaders,
he said he is confident the 1996-97 yell lead
ers will work great as a team.
“Right now, we are feeling each other
out,” he said. “We all have one common goal
— to keep A&M our No. 1 priority. As long
as we do that, everything will work outline.’
Sam Torn has given Chris two
advice to guide him through next year.
“First, to be himself,” he said. “And
ond, much is given and as much is
With honor comes responsibility.”
