Corps March to benefit charity
By Courtney Walker
The Battalion
The 2,100 members of Texas A&M's Corps
of Cadets will participate in the annual March
to the Brazos Saturday.
All proceeds from the event, which is the culmi
nation of a semester-long fund-raising effort, will
benefit the Brazos Valley March of Dimes.
In its 18 years, the event has raised more
than $650,000 for the March of Dimes. Cadets
hope to raise at least $55,000 this year.
The Corps will march from campus to the
Brazos River and back, leaving from the Quad
rangle at 8 a.m. During the event, Corps lead
ership will be passed down in preparation for
the 1996-97 academic year.
Tornado picnic scheduled
The Texas A&M Department of Meteorology is
having its annual Tornado Picnic Saturday at 1 p.m.
at Bee Creek Park in College Station.
The 1996 Fish Camp Crew, which was
named this year for Dr. Michael Biggerstaff, an
assistant meteorology professor, has been invit
ed to the picnic.
The Tornado Picnic provides an opportuni
ty for students and faculty of the meteorology
department to get to know one another.
For information, contact Adam Flouston at 778-1308.
Leak causes library damage
The fourth floor of the Sterling C. Evans Library
was damaged this week as the result of a break or
leak in a chilled-water valve, Joyce Thornton, Evans
Library executive assistant director, said.
The accident, which caused damage to
the ceiling, air conditioner, light fixtures and
books, occurred between 8 p.m. Tuesday
and 6 a.m. Wednesday.
The air conditioner and lights have been re
paired. The carpet is still drying, but the fourth-floor
is open for student use.
Candidates for the position of Texas A&M
College of Education dean will visit campus dur
ing the next three weeks to be interviewed by
students, faculty, administration and Bryan-Col-
lege Station school district superintendents.
A new dean will take over for Dr. Viola E. Flo
rez, who has been serving as the interim dean
since June 1, 1995. Florez was serving as special
assistant to the office of Dr. Ray Bowen, Texas
A&M president, before becoming interim dean.
The candidates will be interviewed by a
search committee of 15 faculty and staff mem
bers, as well as undergraduate and
graduate students.
The committee members, which were se
lected last August, represent the Colleges of
Education, Engineering, Science and Agricul
tural and Life Sciences.
Becky Carr, program coordinator for the Col
lege of Education graduate program, said the
process for finding a new dean usually takes at
least one year to complete.
Carr said that after a search committee is
formed, the members create a job description and
advertise the position opening.
Ronald Douglas, executive vice president and
provost, said committee members will ask candi
dates what their priorities are, what they know
about A&M’s programs, and what they are ac
complishing in their current positions.
Although times have not been designated yet,
students will have the opportunity to meet with
the candidates to ask questions. Appointments
can be scheduled by contacting Carr at 862-1342.
Gene Hall, a professor of educational leader
ship and policy studies at the University of
Northern Colorado, is one of the candidates for
the dean position. He visited A&M Sunday
through Tuesday.
Hall spent 18 years with the Research
and Development Center for Teacher Educa
tion at the University of Texas at Austin and
worked at the University of Florida for two
years as a professor in the Departmei
Educational Leadership.
Jane Close Conoley, professor and as®!
dean at the University of Nebraska-LincoiiiKi
be on campus May 7 to May 10. Conoleyij
taught with the Headstart program for mi
privileged children in New York and atelem®
tary schools in Texas and Georgia.
The third candidate, Walter Gmelch, asm
dean of education at Washington State Uniitis
ty, will be at A&M May 8 to May 10.
Gmelch has been at Washington Statelii
versity since 1980 and has also workedatili
University of Oregon and the Universe
of California.
The three candidates were chosen frou
list of 28, and Dr. Robert Armstrong, a sen
committee member and head of the kill
and kinesiology department, said i
candidates have shown that theycanit
good job providing leadership and vision!
the College of Education.
“We need someone who has administrates;
perience, is an accomplished scholar in
grants and published research, is effectives
diverse constituents, and (is) committed to Is
ership,” Armstrong said.
Dr. Frank B. Ashley, a search comiita
member and associate professor of health arJt
nesiology, said candidates need to hi
teaching, research and service, instead oflii
ing themselves to one specific area.
“A lot of people just look at research,)
we need someone who cares about teacte
also,” Ashley said. “It would be prettjh
teaching someone to teach, when you'll
crummy teacher yourself.”
The research and recognition the caili
dates can bring to A&M is another imports
issue, Ashley said.
“To be on the cutting edge, you have to k
search, and we need someone whose
can bring national recognition,” Ashleysal
“Some of the College of Education progn
received national recognition, but I don’ti
the college has as a whole.”

WACO (AP) — It took
151 years, but they finally
cut a rug Thursday night at

For the first time in the
Southern Baptist school’s history,
dancing was allowed on campus.
At a few minutes past 8

Beethoven’s “Minuet in G.”
