Lady Aggies sweep past lowly Tech
A three-run rally gave A&M
a 4-3 win in the second game
Staff and Wire Reports
The Texas A&M Softball Team
continued their Texas Tech coun
terparts’ slide toward one of the
worst seasons in history Wednes
day, defeating the Red Raiders
twice in a doubleheader at the
Lady Aggie Softball Complex.
In the second game of the dou
bleheader, played in front of a
crowd of 333, the Lady Red
Raiders gave A&M a run for its
money before bowing out, 4-3.
Red Raiders pitcher Jenny Can
non continued one of the worst sea
sons in collegiate softball history.
She gave up just seven hits and al
lowed four unearned runs to the
Lady Aggies, who benefited from
three Texas Tech errors to pull out
the victory.
In the bottom of the first,
the bad luck began for Can
non, as A&M shortstop Gina
Perez reached on a throwing
error by Texas Tech shortstop
Jessica Wimpy.
Two outs later, a single by
Kendall Richards plated Perez and
gave A&M the early lead.
The score remained the same
until the top of the seventh, when
the Lady Red Raiders surprisingly
scored three runs off of Lori Gioco.
After Gioco could only get one
out in the top of the inning, senior
pitcher Erin Field came in to pitch
and got the final two outs of the in
ning, but Tech took a 3-1 lead to
the bottom of the seventh.
But the Lady Aggies were far
from finished.
Two outs surrounded a single
by second baseman Jessi Cady,
bringing the Lady Aggies to within
one out of a shocking loss at home
to the worst team in the Big 12.
But a combination of clutch hit
ting by the Lady Aggies and shod
dy fielding by the Lady Red
Raiders turned the game around.
After Perez flied out to center
field for the second out of the in
ning, leftfielder Heather Hayden
reached on an error by second
baseman Christine Evans, mov
ing Cady to third base. Mya
Truelove followed with a walk to
load the bases.
Richards, already 2-for-3 on the
day, singled, driving in two
runs, and advanced to sec
ond on the throw home.
With runners on second
and third, Field saved the
game again, driving a sin
gle up the middle, scoring
Truelove with the winning
run. In the first game, the
18th-ranked Lady Aggies
sent top gun and senior
pitcher Field to the hill and
watched her work her mag
ic. Field went five innings,
giving up just six hits and
no runs or walks while
moving to 16-8 on the year.
Trina Solesbee came
in and pitched the final
two innings, giving up
just two hits while strik
ing out three.

was the hardback loser for Tech,
getting absolutely no run support
while going the distance, giving up
four runs on 10 hits.
The first game was a scoreless
deadlock until the bottom of the
fourth inning. With one out,
Richards singled to right and Field
blasted her sixth homer of the year
to center, giving the Lady Aggies a
2-0 lead.
The next batter, rightfielder
Machelle Weldon followed suit,
blasting a home run to left field to
give A&M a 3-0 bulge.
The score remained the same
until Machelle Weldon scored on a
wild pitch in the bottom of the
sixth inning, propelling the Lady
Aggies to their 29th win of the sea
son against 12 losses. A&M also
moved within a game of .500 at 5-6
in Big 12 play.
Leading the attack for the
Lady Aggies at the plate was
Field, with two runs batted in
and a run scored.
