“Carl has no sense of direction,” he said.
“He doesn’t know how to get to places. He will
ask how to get to Wal-Mart.”
Webb, who has known Baggett since they
worked together as redpots two and a half
years ago, said Baggett must make several
trips before he knows how to get somewhere.
When Webb met Baggett for the first time,
he said Baggett asked to borrow money for
food; a friendship developed nonetheless.
“The first time I met him we pretty much hit
if off,” he said. “He never did pay me back
my couple of bucks.”
Will Hurd, a freshman computer science
major and Baggett’s campaign manager, said
he first met Baggett after a speech Baggett
gave at Fish Camp.
Hurd said his first impression of Baggett
was that he was passionate about A&M.
“It was the way he talked,” he said. “He
would get real impassioned about A&M.
You could see it in is eyes ... The school is
part of him.”
Perhaps his enthusiasm for A&M and Bon
fire comes from the fact that Baggett has been
attending A&M football games since he was
four years old and has not missed Bonfire in
12 years.
Hurd said it was a challenge to keep up
with Baggett during the campaign because
Baggett involves himself so heavily with
A&M activities.
“He was so damn busy,” he said.
Hurd said he and Baggett spent a great
deal of time together nonetheless.
“His girlfriend and his sister called me the
ball and chain,” he said.
Sparks may fly between Baggett and his
girlfriend of two years, but nothing can com
pare to the fireworks Baggett set off as a
young boy.
“I was a pyromaniac,” he said. “I played
with matches.”
Baggett said he started a small fire in his
home when he was 10 by lighting fireworks in
his closet.
The incident was not damaging, he said,
but it scared him enough not to do it again.
However, fear did not keep Baggett away
from this year’s elections, despite his loss to
Toby Boenig last year in the run-offs.
Baggett said it may have been a risk run
ning for office again, but that is the kind of
thing A&M inspires.
“You learn just as much losing as you do
winning,” he said. “I think the biggest differ
ence between a fish entering A&M and a se
nior leaving is not as much the education as it
is the experience they gain taking risks.”
But Baggett’s confidence does not imply
that academics have never been a challenge
for him.
He said the fear of not being able to handle
college courses inspired him to join the Corps
of Cadets.
“I was not a scholar in high school, and I
felt that having three hours of forced study
every night would at least set me in the right
direction,” he said.
The studying benefited Baggett, who
has been chosen for CBA Fellows, a leader
ship program for the top one percent of
business students.
Baggett is in the five-year accounting pro-
gram business, hut he said he will withdtji
from it to meet his office s demands.
“All the plans and beliefs that I ranon^
going to be implemented so that 1 dontli
anyone down,” he said.
Webb said several of Baggetts persoiu)
ity traits will make him a good studtj]
body representative.
For example, he said, Baggett remeitifei
the names and faces of most people he meets
“It just makes people feel more comfort#
like they are on the same level, andthaUei
not unapproachable,” he said.
Webb said Baggett’s emphasis onorp
nization will also help him as studentbi]
president. Baggett carries a fileinwliti
he can find tons of information withtl
flip of a wrist.
"But his room looks like crap,” he said.
Webb said one thing he notices all
Baggett is he practices good personal hygietit
“You will be hard pressed to find a beta
smelling guy,” he said.
“You would not walk up to himandsi]
‘damn that man smells good,” he said,Tn
you definitely notice his lack of a foul odor,
Webb said many guys in the dormlackpa
sonal hygiene, hut Baggett is not one of them.
“Carl does not strike you as one of tbs
guys,” he said.
“If you were to walk up to him rightib
he would not smell bad,” he said.
One of Baggett’s greatest hopes is that®
pie will not treat him differently now thati
is president.
“I hope everyone will treat methesameg
they always did,” he said. “I amstillCa
Baggett — friend, Class of ’96, companion
who is here to get an education just like even
one else.”
