Quesada, Anderson take top honors
in A&M Men’s Basketball Banquet
By Nick Georgandis
The Battalion
In a lighthearted end to what
was at times a nerve racking year,
the Texas A&M Men’s Basketball
Team honored its best Thursday
night during its 1996 Banquet
Thursday night at G. Rollie White
Coliseum.
Along with highlight films of
the 1995-96 season, a tribute to
lone graduating senior Matt Har
alson and memories of seasons
past by former A&M players, the
evening was host to seven awards
given out by A&M Head Coach
Tony Barone.
The big winner Thursday night
was sophomore Dario Quesada,
who took home both the "Daniel
Scoates Garner Academic Extra
Effort” plaque and the “Loraine
and Breezy Breazeale Free-Throw
Proficiency” trophy.
Quesada was the Aggies’ top
free-throw converter during the
regular-season, nailing 85 percent
of his attempts.
The “Most Improved” award was
no surprise — going to freshman
center Brad Strieker. Strieker be
gan the year on the injured list, but
eventually worked his way into the
A&M starting lineup and at 6-feet-
11-inches, became the Aggies’ first
legitimate post threat in years.
The “Windex” award for re
bounding — also known as clean
ing the glass — went to freshman
Calvin Davis, whose leaping abili
ty and hustle made him a fan fa
vorite at G. Rollie White.
Barone was exceptionally giv
ing in his praise to junior guard
Tracey Anderson, the recipient of
the “Mr. Defense” award.
“Tracey played this entire sea
son at about 75 percent,” Barone
said. “Next year, he will be guard
ing the very best guards in the Big
12, people like Jacques Vaughn of
Kansas, and I think people will see
what kind of a quality player he is.”
Anderson also picked up the award
for leading the team in scoring.
Barone presented a lightheart
ed look at the career of Matt Har
alson, a fifth-year senior, who
walked on to the Aggies during his
freshman year. Haralson’s video
tribute included several practice
shots as well as rare game footage
in which he had his shot rejected
by Texas Tech’s Jason Sasser.
The Aggies begin the 1996-97
season at home with an exhibition
against the Melbourne Magic on
Oct. 28. Their first Big 12 game
will be against the University of
Texas on Jan.15, 1997, at G. Rollie
White Coliseum.

Bailey
Continued from Page 7
entered the season with their sights
set on winning the last Southwest
Conference championship, but the
Aggies have struggled in conference
play and are currently in fourth place.
Though Bailey does not believe a
championship is out of reach, he says
that there is a definite sense of ur
gency prevailing in the Aggie camp.
“Things just haven’t come togeth
er for us yet,” Bailey said. “Whatever
the cause of that is, I don’t think the
coaches or players know. But we re
alize that we can’t wait back any
longer. If we’re going to put a run to
gether, it has to come right now. Our
main focus now is getting into the
(NCAA) regionals.”
Another point of focus in Bailey’s
life is academics. Before the season,
Bailey received the GTE Academic
Achievement Award given to athletes
who posted a grade-point average of
3.0 or better in the past academic
year. According to Bailey, balancing
his academic responsibilities with his
work on the diamond is a struggle.
“As athletes there’s a lot of times,
like after night games when you
don’t get home until past 11 o’clock
or so, that you have to study when
your dead tired and don’t feel like
doing much of anything,” Bailey
said. “It doesn’t make study time the
most productive, but it’s just like
anything else — you have to push
yourself a little to get the job done.”
Bailey is not complaining, however,
as he believes that being a major college
baseball player has its privileges. But
he says sharing an apartment with for
mer Aggie football standouts, Corey
Pullig and Hunter Goodwin, keeps him
from thinking he is a campus celebrity.
“Living with two football players
puts things is perspective,” Bailey
said. “Football is pretty much (wor
shiped) around here, and baseball
sort of takes a backseat. Believe me,
they wouldn’t let me walk around
like some kind of celebrity.”
Bailey and Pullig both grew up in
Deer Park and have known each
other since they were seven-year-
olds competing in little league.
“We were real competitive as
kids,” Bailey said. “I guess you could
say our relationship started out as
one of hatred. In baseball or basket
ball, he was always on the other
team, and we always had to go up
against each other.”
So what type of baseball player
would Texas A&M’s all-time win-
ningest quarterback make?
“I’ll just say that if he would have
stuck to just baseball, he would’ve
made a good player,” Bailey said. “I’ve
got to be politically correct on that one.”
Dream Teamens?
Source reports
Barkley, Richmond
NEW YORK (AP) — Charles
Barkley and Mitch Richmond will
be asked to fill the last two spots on
the U.S. Olympic men’s basketball
team, a source told The Associated
Press on Thursday night.
Barkley of the Phoenix Suns and
Richmond of the Sacramento Kings
were chosen for the Dream Team by
USA Basketball’s 10-man committee
during a conference call Thursday
night. If they accept, their selections
will be announced Sunday on NBC.
The NBA refused comment, say
ing the league wanted to wait until
the players accept or reject the invi
tations. Richmond did not return a
call to his hotel room. Barkley could
not be reached for comment.
The AP learned of the choices from
a person close to the selection commit
tee who asked not to be identified.
Barkley and Richmond would
join a roster that includes Anfemee
Hardaway, Grant Hill, Karl Malone,
Reggie Miller, Hakeem Olajuwon,
Shaquille O’Neal, Scottie Pippen,
David Robinson, Glenn Robinson
and John Stockton.
