Magic, Lakers keep
Spurs in mini-slump
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) —
Vlade Divac had 19 points and 11
rebounds and Eddie Jones scored 13
of his 19 points in the third quarter
Sunday as the Los Angeles Lakers
beat the suddenly cold San Antonio
Spurs 107-97.
San Antonio's David Robinson
had 40 points and 11 rebounds in a
losing cause, the third time he's
scored 40 or more points in a game
this season.
After being held to three points
in the first half — all on foul shots
— Jones came alive as the Lakers
outscored the Spurs 29-23 in the
third period to go ahead for good.
After winning a franchise-record 17
straight games and going 16-0 in
March, the Spurs have lost three of four.

Patriots overwhelm odds, Aggies
Stew Milne, The Battalion
In one of the bright spots of Saturday's doubleheader loss, Texas A&M outfielder Ryan Huffman slides headfirst into home to score the Aggies'
fourth run of the game during their 5-4 loss to Dallas Baptist University at Olsen Field.
Staff and Wire Reports
With all the concern given last
week to Dallas Baptist Universi
ty’s vaunted hitting attack, who
would have though the Patriots’
pitching would have given Texas
A&M so much trouble?
Such was the case Saturday at
Olsen Field as DBU swept the
Aggie Baseball Team in a double-
header, 5-4 and 6-2. The two loss
es dropped A&M to 25-13 on the
year and gave A&M five losses in
its last six games.
In the first game, Aggie hit
ters combined for 16 hits, but
they also went a combined 4-of-
18 with runners in scoring posi
tion. In all, A&M left 14 runners
on base, compared to just two by
the Patriots.
DBU pitcher Aaron
Lineweaver played with fire all
afternoon, giving up 16 hits in
eight and two-thirds innings
pitched, somehow giving up only
four earned runs while improving
to 8-1 on the year.
Texas A&M sophomore Shane
King pitched exceptionally well
for the Aggies, going the distance
while giving up just six hits and
only two earned runs, but he
eventually took the loss to drop to
5-2 in 1996.
The one bright spot in the first
game was the performance of
A&M freshman designated hitter
Jason Tyner. Tyner went 5-for-5
at the plate, one hit shy of the
Texas A&M school record set by
Mike Hickey in 1991 against
Westmont.
Tyner also recorded his team
leading 26th stolen base of the
year, putting him within range of
the all-time Aggie record.
With 16 games plus the poten
tial for action in the Southwest
Conference tournament, Tyner is
10 steals away from Chuck
Knoblauch’s single-season steal
mark of 36 set in 1989. Tyner al
ready owns the Aggie freshman
record for steals, and with one
more steal will tie Billy Harlan’s
1993 mark of 27 bases — the
third most in Aggie history.
The second game was an error-
filled mess that proved how bad
A&M’s luck was. Although Dallas
Baptist recorded seven of the
game’s 10 errors. Patriot pitcher
Scott Mullen continually worked
his way out of trouble while going
the distance to improve to 6-0 on
the season.
Mullen gave up just five hits
while striking out eight batters to
outduel A&M’s John Sneed, who
went seven innings, giving up
four earned runs while striking
out eight.
In the second game, the Patri
ots scored two runs in the top of
the first, and kept the Aggies
from ever leading during the dou
bleheader.
The Aggies closed within 2-1
with a run in the bottom of the
second, but Dallas Baptists pro
ceeded to score three runs over
the next three innings to estab
lish a 5-1 lead going to the final
three innings.
The Aggies got as close as 5-2
in the bottom of the seventh but
were blanked over the final two
innings in front of a disappointed
crowd of 1,486.
Friday’s game against Dallas
Baptist was cancelled because of
inclimate weather.
The Aggies will attempt to
break their slump and a two-
game home losing streak Tues
day when they host Southwest
Texas State in a doubleheader
beginning at 5 p.m. at Olsen
Field.
Sooners KO Lady Ags twice
Dave House The Battalion
Texas A&M sophomore catcher Amy Schmaltz takes her cut at the
plate during the Lady Aggies' most recent homestand.
Staff and Wire Reports
The Texas A&M Softball
Team found out what it was like
to play Big 12 competition this
weekend.
It’s not very fun.
The Big 12-leading Oklahoma
Sooners used dominating pitch
ing to sweep the Lady Aggies in
a doubleheader in Norman, 4-2
and 6-2.
The usually-productive Aggie
offense managed only nine hits
in the two games ass Sooner
pitchers Jill Most and Jennifer
Jaime pitched back-to-back com
plete games against A&M.
The Lady Aggies hung tough
against Oklahoma in the first
game, and took a 2-0 lead in the
top of the fourth inning on an
RBI single by Kami Tucker and
an error by OU second baseman
Brenda Rogers.
Perhaps something in the
Lady Aggies’ attack spurred the
Sooners, for in the bottom of the
inning, they started their own
rally. By the time it was over,
Texas A&M starter Trina Solse-

Say it ain’t so, Too Tall...
Athletes hit the big screen
On Saturday night, I fell vic
tim of insomnia around 3 a.m.
and found myself on the couch
watching quite simply the worst
science fiction movie ever made.
It was called Hologram Man
and combined the worst aspects of
Demolition Man (yes, I know
there were quite a few to chose
from) and Lawnmower Man (see
Demolition Man).
One of the bad guys in the
movie intrigued me to watch on,
because I couldn’t quite place a
name with his face. Finally, as
the credits rolled, it hit me.
The role of “Cyclops,” a virtual
gansta if there ever was one, was
played by Ed Jones, as in former
Dallas Cowboy megastar “Too
Tall” Jones.
Oh, Too Tall, did you learn
nothing during your little profes
sional boxing stint?
Jones’ debacle on Cinemax
made me ponder why so many
people are bitten with the acting
bug just because they happen to
be quite large in another field.
Certainly Jones is not the first
professional athlete to try his hand
in front of the camera, but so many
have done such a better job.
What? You’d like a top 10 list
to help you gain further insight
onto my theory? Well, all right.
10.Well, I could only think of
nine, so Too Tall Jones in Holo
gram Man gets it by default. But,
read on! The next nine are quali
ty, family entertainment!
