Nebraska keeps unlikely hot streak going in NIT, 90-78
The Cornhuskers defeated Tulane to move on to the championship against the St. Joseph ’s-Alabama winner.
NEW YORK (AP) — Nebraska contin
ued its hot postseason shooting in a 90-78
victory over Tulane on Tuesday night and
will play for the NIT championship.
Erick Strickland and Bernard Garner
each had 20 points for the Cornhuskers
(20-14), who will meet the winner of the
Alabama-St. Joseph’s semifinal for the ti
tle on Thursday night at Madison Square
Garden.
The Cornhuskers shot 57 percent Tues
day night after having shot 54 percent
during the first three games of the tour
nament.
They took control for a while in both
halves, but Tulane (21-10) kept it close be
fore tiring late.
Jerald Honeycutt led Tulane with 16
points. Patrick Lewis added 13 points for
the Green Wave, while LaVeldro Simmons
had 12.
Tyronn Lue added 15 points for Nebras
ka, which had lost 10 of 11 games going

The two teams will meet Saturday in
the NCAA Semifinals.
Not one of the teams in this
weekend’s Final Four has
reached the New York metro
politan area yet and the clever
lines and comparisons are al
ready about played out.
“What time is the junior
varsity game?” more than one
quipster has asked of Satur
day’s opening national semifi
nal between Syracuse and Mis
sissippi State, the ugly stepsis
ters of the weekend.
“When’s the last time the ti
tle game was played on Satur
day?” has become one of the
cute comments about the
nightcap between Massachu
setts and Kentucky, who just
happened to be ranked Nos. 1
and 2, respectively.
Then there are the compar
isons to Final Fours past, such
as 1983, when No. 1 met No. 2
in the NCAA tournament, or
any recent NFL season when
the NFC title game has decided
the team that will win the Su
per Bowl to come.
For those who believe we
learn from history, a look back
at 1983 is in order. Top-ranked
Houston put on a dunking spec
tacle in beating No. 2 Louisville
94-81 in the semifinals.
Two nights later, North Car
olina State, coached by the late
Jim Valvano, pulled off one of
college basketball’s greatest up
sets, a point Syracuse coach Jim
Boeheim and Mississippi State
coach Richard Williams will
surely find some comfort in.
What makes the Kentucky-
UMass matchup even more deli
cious is that it’s a rematch of the
November game that saw Mass
achusetts handle the Wildcats in
an impressive 92-82 victory. The
Minutemen lost only once this
season and Kentucky just twice.
Syracuse comes in with eight
losses and Mississippi State has
one less, 15 reasons why the
“other” semifinal has been
dwarfed in the attention arena.
Mississippi State and Massa
chusetts are making their first
Final Four appearances, while
Syracuse is there for the third
time and the first since 1987.
Can Mississippi State break
Syracuse’s 2-3 zone? Can the
Orangemen handle the physical
play of the Bulldogs?
The biggest question, howev
er, may be: Did we learn any
thing from the 1983 Final Four?
