So now, with the Final Four looming ahead, I submit a few random thoughts for your approval. between UMass and Arkansas and Texas Tech and Georgetown games with the TV on mute. Somebody check the insides of those Aggie bats. In taking three of four weekend games from the University of Houston, the Aggie Baseball Team came out of their recent offensive semi-slump to pound Cougar pitching for a gaudy total of 40 runs. No disrespect to Syracuse and Mississippi State, of course, but if you’re like me, you’re a little disappointed that Kentucky and UMass are forced to square off in the semifinals this Saturday. 35-1 versus 32-2. Calipari versus Fftino. Camby, Padilla and Travieso versus the whirlwind Wildcat talent barrage. This matchup deserves the title game spotlight. Kentucky-UMass in the semi finals is like the NFC Champi onship Game before the Super Bowl. Whoever wins is almost assured a national champi onship. It also gives the Syra- cuse-Mississippi State tilt the glamour of a junior varsity game. Why am I not surprised that Cowboy All-Pro wide receiver, Michael Irvin, was found in an Irving hotel room containing two women, former-Cowboy reserve tight end Alfredo Roberts and a substantial supply of illegal drugs? Why won’t I be surprised if Irvin walks away from the whole mess with nothing more than a few attorney fees? NBA score from Sunday, March 24: Toronto 109, Chicago 108. Is there anything certain in life anymore? The largest crowd to see an NBA game this season (36,131) packed Toronto’s Sky- Dome to witness what is no doubt the greatest victory in Raptor franchise history. With the loss, the Bulls dropped to 60-8 and have 14 games left in the regular season to reach the 70-win mark. Speaking of Calipari and Piti- no and the success of their squads, maybe the only thing a school needs to do to achieve basketball greatness is to hire an Italian-American head coach. Well, at least we can use that thought to keep up our hope for Tony Barone and the Texas A&M Men’s Basketball program. I never thought it could be possible, but there’s a television basketball broadcaster more an noying than Dick Vitale. CBS analyst Quinn Buckner, former head coach for the hapless Dal las Mavericks, has officially tak en over the role. If you’re like me, Buckner’s “I’ll talk to you the whole game and get excited abouit every dunk” style is more than a little bit grating. 1 was forced to watch most of the East regional games The Cowboys signed free-agent linebackers Broderick Thomas of Minnesota and Fred Strickland of Green Bay recently. With Robert Jones leaving for St. Louis and Dixon Edwards departing for Minnesota, that brings the Dal las’ offseason total to two mediocre linebackers lost, two mediocre linebackers gained. In case you missed it, among the various people and organiza tions Mike Tyson thanked afterhe whipped Frank Bruno on March 16 for the WBO heavyweight crown in Las Vegas were the Vice Lords and the Folks — two notori ous, Chicago-based gangs. Apparently members of the rival gangs helped ensure Tyson’s safety while the boxer served out his three-year sen tence for rape in an Indiana prison. And I thought peace and love and all that warm, fuzzy stuff Lady Aggies can’t afford SFA slip-up Staff and Wire Reports The Texas A&M Softball Team will take on Stephen F. Austin Tuesday at 5 p.m. in Nacogdoches in a doubleheader tune-up before beginning Big 12 conference play. A&M Head Softball Coach Bob Brock will lead his team (22-6) atop a seven-game win streak and a 21-4 series record against the La- dyjacks (9-22). The contests will be the second consecutive doubleheader for the Lady Aggies, who most recently punished the Baylor Bears 4-0 and 9- 2 on March 20. Senior Erin Field went the dis tance in the first game for the Ag gies and improved her record to 10- 4'on the season, and junior shortstop Kendall Richards batted 2-for-4 with a home run and tl RBIs in the second game. The Lady Aggies are led at plate by Richards and Field, 1 have pounded the ball for a . and .384 average, respectively. The doubleheader against Ladyjacks will be the Lady Ag final games before they enter first season of Big 12 confere: playing for the first Big 12 ath championship ever. The road to the champiow has some roadblocks for the 1 ranked Lady Aggies.
