checks,” she said. “But sometimes
it’s a problem that I can write
only 12 checks per month without
an additional charge.”
White is not the only student
who primarily uses checks to
handle business around town.
Jim Kuboviak, Brazos County at
torney, said his office prosecutes
those who do not make payments
on checks that have bounced.
A check written in Bryan-Col-
lege Station can clear a student’s
bank within three days. If there
are insufficient funds, the mer
chant gives the student 10 days
to rectify the problem. After 10
days, Kuboviak issues a 48-hour
arrest warning.
Kuboviak said that although
most students never reach the
point of arrest, careless spending
should be monitored.
“We are not out to get the per
son that bounces one small check
at the grocery store — everyone
does that every once in a while,”
he said. “But we have to target
those who ignore the courtesy no
tices we send and never make
good on the checks.
“Some students in College Sta
tion work their way through
school by writing bad checks,
They’re a small percentage, but
they’re out there.”
Kuboviak said students should
realize that purposely bouncing
checks is a crime, not a prank.
“Every semester there is a new
scam,” he said, “and every semes
ter people get caught. Students
are risking their college careers
and jeopardizing the welfare of
area merchants.”
Kuboviak said that if students
do not respond to the arrest
warning notices issued, it be
comes a matter of criminal theft,
which differs little from shoplift
ing. He said writing hot checks
between $20 and $500 is punish
able by a fine of up to $2,000, six
months in jail, or both.
