(AP) — rWayne Gretzky returned to the * Forum to a mixture of cheers and *boos Monday night, three weeks •after the Los Angeles Kings trad- . ed him to St. Louis in a deal that f brought the Great One the harsh- f est criticism of his career. Scattered boos rang out when seys, but one man taped over the name on the back and - wrote ‘Wayne Who?’ Before the players came out, cheers sounded j» Gretzky skated out for pregame t warmups, but most of the crowd when high lights of Gret zky’s career in a black-and- £was not yet seated. The booing 'picked up as he returned to the •ice for the start of the his first •game at the Forum since being jtraded Feb. 27. » “They pay a lot of money to “come here. They can do or say Jwhat they want,” he said in a J pregame TV interview. J Some fans wore No. 99 jer- white Kings uniform were shown on the J umbotron, along with the words “Thank you, Wayne.” The crowd’s loyalties were clearly split. Gretzky with some booing and others cheering each time Gretzky touched the puck on his first shift. He generated the same response Sunday night from a sellout crowd of 17,174 in Anaheim. “When you go back and play an old team, it’s always hard,” he said. Gretzky’s mind is on more than just playing against his old team. His 7-year-old daughter is sched uled for eye surgery Tuesday, and a close friend of his died recently. “It’s difficult to keep focused on playing hockey,” he said. Gretzky faced the Kings with out his recently traded friends Marty McSorley, Jari Kurri and Shane Churla. The Kings are 3-4 since he was traded Feb. 27, while St. Louis is 4-3-1. Gretzky has four goals and seven assists in eight games with his new team. NBA hits Rodman with 6-game, $20,000 suspension for headbutt The Bulls 'forward will lose over $200,000 in salary PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Dennis Rodman’s latest tirade will cost him six games and more than $200,000. It could cost the Chicago Bulls a chance to become the first NBA team to win 70 games. Rodman, the league’s leading rebounder and most volatile character, got a six-game sus pension without pay and $20,000 fine Monday for head butting a referee and other out bursts after being ejected from Saturday night’s game. “Physical assaults on referees cannot and will not be tolerated under any circumstances,” NBA vice president Rod Thom said. Rodman’s suspension was the third longest levied by the NBA. Kermit Washington was suspended for 26 games in 1977 for punching Rudy Tom- janovich, and Vernon Maxwell received a 10-game suspension last year for going into the stands and hitting a fan. With Rodman and the in jured Scottie Pippen out, more of the burden to carry the Bulls will fall on Michael Jordan, who said Rodman let down the peo ple “who gave him an opportu nity to prove himself.” “We’re trying to progress as a team and he kind of let it go by the waysides,” Jordan said. “A lot of what you see in Dennis is his image and persona. He has continued to feed off that and that’s very dangerous to this team’s success.” Jerry Krause, the team’s vice president of basketball opera tions, acknowledged Rodman 2 roommates needed for summer. 2 bdrm/2 ba. On shuttle rt. 693-5690 committed an “extremely serious offense,” but thinks the penalty was “too severe for a player whose conduct has been excellent up to this point this year.” Bulls coach Phil Jackson didn’t quarrel with the league’s discipline. “Certainly his distractions are not acceptable,” he said. “I think the league called it right.” Rodman appeared in the lobby of the team’s hotel before the game but declined to com ment to ESPN. Several teammates said they sensed Rodman’s patience with NBA officials was wearing thin. “You can see it built slowly be cause the referees are paying so much attention to him,” Bulls center Bill Wennington said at the team hotel before Monday night’s 98-94 victory over Philadelphia. “You know with his personality something’s going to happen eventually.” Along with his $20,000 fine and an automatic $1,000 fine for his ejection, Rodman will lose about $34,500 in salary for each game he is suspended. That means the incident will cost him a total of $228,000. It could also prove costly for the Bulls, who are on pace to break the record of 69 victories AP Photo Chicago's Michael Jordan is stopped by the Knicks Patrick Ewing. Jor dan will be without Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman for a while. in a season by the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers. Without Rod- man and ailing All-Star Pippen, who is expected to be sidelined for another week, Chicago (58- 7) qould be vulnerable. ' D The Bulls, in the midst of a stretch of three games in four nights, must win 12 of their last 17 games to set the record. “As far as winning 70 it may hurt us,” Bulls said center Luc Longley said at the team hotel. “But as far as down the stretch it may not be a bad thing. ... Other guys will have to step up and play a lot of minutes.” After being ejected during the first quarter of a win over New Jersey, Rodman head butted ref Ted Bernhardt, knocked over a water cooler, stripped off his jersey and shouted obscenities before leav ing the court. “The suspension and fine re flect not only the head-butting, but the totality of his actions on the court,” said Thorn, who was at the game and saw the tirade. Rodman, who averages 15.1 rebounds, claims that refs have been picking on him because of his bad-boy reputation. He won’t be eligible to play again until April 2, when the Bulls visit Miami. “They can suspend me-W, make an example out of Dennis Rodman, I don’t care,” Rodman 1 said after the New Jersey game.' “If 1 butted him, I butted him. So suspend me, David Stern. Suspend me, Rod Thorn. You guys are so big, suspend me.” Rodman, seeking his fifth straight rebounding title, is as well know-n for his troubled past as his ferocious work on the boards. Since October 1992, he has been suspended at least seven times by the league or his team. He also has been fined at least nine times during that period. Last season, while playing for the San Antonio Spurs, he was benched during Game 4 of the Western Conference semifi nals for arguing with coach Bob Hill and refusing to join team huddles. The Spurs traded him to Chicago for center Will Per due on Oct. 2, 1995. Leone Now pre-leasing for May & Aug. Hickory Park Duplex es. (off S.W. Both of us had our game faces on before Tech and A&M faced each other in the opening round of the tour nament. However, a not-so-pro- fessional wager was made on how many points Tech would win by — I’m not a two-per center, I’m a realist. At any rate, I sat back al most confident that the Aggies would come through for me. Af ter a close first half, Tech pulled away as expected in the second half, but farther than what I had hoped. With every Jason Sasser dunk, Corey Carr jump shot and other Tech score, my Red Raider colleague would sneer and let out a little giggle. Each time I was forced to fight back the urge to plunge my pen into his ear. The Aggies went on to lose by 28 points. I walked away with my wallet $10 lighter. But the best was yet to come. While writing my story in the media lounge after the game, I looked up to find Rice Head Football Coach Ken Hatfield sit ting a few chairs down the table from me. I should have kept writing. I should have kept my mouth shut. Instead, being the large goober that I am, I went over to introduce myself. Coach Hatfield shook my hand and was nice enough share a few moments of conversation before heading back to watch Rice play TCU. Finally, something had gone right. You actually handled yourself well, I thought — that is until I looked in a restroom mirror shortly thereafter and saw a prominent piece of mucus under one of my nostrils. Though I managed to avoid an other serious head wound during my second SWC tournament ex perience, the whole affair, was as humiliating as the first. Highway mayhem, financial loss, and em barrassment caused by an un sightly nasal extremity — I've had better days. Combine all this with a minor case of food poison ing from the all-you-can-eat en chilada media buffet, and you can see why I’m not the least bit sad that 1996 was the final year of the SWC tournament.
