Esparza spoke at a news conference with the film’s writer, and director, Gregory Nava, and sev eral members of the singer’s family, who left early without answering any questions. Selena’s father and the executive producer of the film, Abraham Quintanilla Jr., said only, “It’s a pro ject that my family and I have been working on, and it’s finally getting time to start the project.” The casting search will begin March 16 in San Antonio. Three other casting calls will be held in Los Angeles and Miami on March 17 and in Chica go on March 23. Esparza said the cities were cho sen because of their large Latina populations. The filmmakers are looking for two Latina women to portray Selena, who was fatally shot March 31, 1995, at a Corpus Christi motel. The singer’s former fan club president, Yolanda Sal divar, was convicted of her murder last fall and sentenced to life in prison. Selena’s death will not be depicted in the movie, Nava said. Instead it will focus on her rise to fame, from the time her father first noticed her talent at the age of 6 through her years as the sweetheart of Tejano music and her preparations to cross over onto the English pop charts prior to her death at age 23. “We want to make a movie that celebrates the life and career of Selena ... a movie that’s positive and life-affirming,” Nava said. One actress will portray Selena from the age of 6 to 10. Nava said the filmmakers were looking for a Latina girl about 8 years old who can play Sele na as the “young, perky, somewhat hyperactive, very uninhibited ... girl that she was.” “She was really a gift, so we have to find a young girl who can do that,” he said. Another woman will plhy Selena from age 18 to 23. For this part, the filmmakers said they are looking for a Latina woman who is smart, head strong and outgoing, with a radiant smile. Nava said a physical resemblance to Selena at both ages is a requirement but that the “spirit of Selena is more important.” Winter weather wanders back to Texas Male roommate needed. Some Texans may have questioned his wisdom after bone-chilling cold gave way to record-breaking heat. But the cold is back. In a big way. Single-digit readings were recorded in the Panhandle early Thursday, while wind chills sunk deep below zero. And more record low tempera tures were possible. “It’s still winter,” proclaimed meteorologist Skip Ely of the National Weather Service in Fort Worth. But, he noted, the fluctuating temperatures are not that un common. “Some years the jet stream pattern is pretty much west to east and that usually leads to mild, less severe systems. But in some years, there is a lot of am plitude to the upper-level winds,” he said. Record-breaking heat arrived in late February, with ther mometers above the century mark. On Feb. 21, 19 Texas cities reported all-time highs, with Del Rio reaching 103. Last weekend, temperatures climbed into the 70s. By early Thursday, the mer cury had sunk to 6 degrees in Amarillo, aided by an Arctic cold front packing howling northerly winds. Record low temperatures of 12 degrees were reported in both Lubbock and Midland. Clear skies in South Texas were expected to produce freezing temperatures overnight, drop ping into the 20s across most ar eas except for the immediate coast and Rio Grande Valley. The National Weather Service said record lows were in jeopardy for many areas of the region. Friday should be breezy and cool with highs from the 40s to the 60s. The West Texas forecast called for a chance of snow flur ries Friday with possible lows in the single digits. Highs were expected in the 30s and 40s except for the 50s along the Rio Grande.Near record low temperatures were expected overnight in North Texas. Light winds and clear to partly cloudy skies should push temperatures into the teens to lower 20s across the region. The Battalion CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING • Easy • Affordable • Effective For More Information, call 845-0569 Continued from Page 1 when I heard it,” said Chieko Aguni, a local counselor for rape victims. “The sentence will never heal the fear, shock and pain they caused that little girl.” Relatives of the servicemen called the penalties unfair. “It’s very political — it seems they are being used as scapegoats,” said Kim Cannon, Ledet’s sister. She added Okinawans will continue blaming Americans until the island’s U.S. bases are closed. Michael Griffith, an Ameri can lawyer representing the families of Harp and Ledet, said the two were planning an ap peal. He blamed Japanese lawyers for not properly prepar ing the defendants. Gill’s lawyer, Masanori Higa, said the sentence was “slightly more severe” than he expected and that Gill had said he would appeal if the sentence exceeded five years. The crime reinforced the im age of the lawless GI in Japan and exacerbated longstanding resentment of the American presence^ which locals say brings crime and unfairly bur dens Okinawa. One-fifth of the island is taken up by U.S. mili tary installations. Record numbers of Okinawans have rallied against the bases. The largest protest, held in Octo ber, drew 60,000 people, and many of them demanded the im mediate withdrawal of the 27,000 U.S. troops. The U.S. Embassy refused to comment on the ruling today; it said only that an American mili tary observer present at all the proceedings reported no problems contrary to U.S. or Japanese judi cial practices. “Japan is a nation under the rule of law, just as the United States is a nation under the rule of law,” the embassy statement said. "The sentence will never heal the fear, shock and pain they caused that little girl." — Chieko Aguni counselor for rape victims Okinawa Gov. Masahide Ota, a longstanding opponent of the U.S. bases, has called for the troops’ removal by 2015, and his government has drawn up de tailed plans for the departure. The furor over the case prompted extensive apologies by American officials and fueled talk of moving some of the soldiers on Okinawa to other parts of Japan or the Asian-Pacific. About a dozen red-stenciled signs hung outside the court to day, some reading “American An imals Get Out” in English, “We respect each other’s legal processes.” Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto told Kyodo News that the sentences were “some what more severe” than past rape decisions, but he suggest ed the punishment was fair in light of the victim’s age. U.S. and Japanese officials met today for the fourth ses sion of a joint committee studying how to scale back the bases in Okinawa and make them less burdensome to Okinawans.
