SAN ANTONIO (AP) — The San Antonio Spurs beat the Denver Nuggets for the 10th straight time Wednesday night, winning 100-90 despite losing David Robinson in the second period. Robinson lacerated his fin ger trying to block a shot by Bryant Stith. He needed stitches to close the wound and did not return, finishing with six points to end his 157-game streak of reach ing double figures in points. Vinny Del Negro paced the Spurs with 29 points, includ ing three straight baskets as San Antonio opened the sec ond half with 10 points in a row for a 61-50 lead. The Nuggets were led by rookie Antonio McDyess with 16 points, although he left in the third period with a broken nose after colliding with team mate Dikembe Mutombo. Denver led much of the first half but never made a serious run in the second half. The Spurs twice led by 16, in cluding 100-84, before the Nuggets scored the last six points. San Antonio, in a battle with Utah and Houston for the Midwest Division lead, upped its record to 40-18 with its sec ond win over the Nuggets in three nights. Denver, trying to clinch the eighth and final playoff spot in the West, dropped to 24-34. The Spurs performed X-rays on Robinson’s hand as a precaution. They came back negative. The laceration is near the top joint of Robinson’s right mid die finger. Nuggets-Spurs DENVER (90) L. Bizarre technicality will keep fastest woman out of Olympics □ Kristine Quance was cited for using an illegal stroke in the 400-meter of the Olympic Trials. INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The fastest woman won’t be swimming the 400-meter individual medley final at the U.S. Olympic Trials. Kristine Quance blew away the field by four seconds in the preliminary heats Wednesday only to be disqualified for an obscure violation rarely called at the world-class level. Her elimination for using an illegal stroke cre ated a new controversy for U.S. swimming offi cials on the opening day of the Olympic trials, a meet already overshadowed by the presence of freestyler Jessica Foschi, who tested positive for steroids last year. Quance led all qualifiers with a time of 4 min utes, 42.28 seconds, but the letters ‘DQ’ were posted next to her name on the scoreboard as soon as the race ended. “She would have been a legitimate medal con tender,” said Dennis Pursley, national team director. Meet officials said Quance swam illegally during the transition from backstroke to breaststroke starting the third leg of the four-stroke race. The rule states once the wall is touched, the swimmer may turn in any manner but the shoul ders must be at or past the vertical toward the breast when the swimmer leaves the wall. The swimmer must have attained breaststroke form prior to the first arm stroke. “Technically, she was past vertical toward her back when she left the wall,” meet referee Robert Brown said. “Unless I personally observe the al leged infraction, I do not have the power to re verse the decision.” There is no provision in the rules that would allow the call to be changed, despite the avail ability of video replay. Brown refused to identify the turn judge who made the call. He said the man has the minimum four years of national officiating experience re quired to work the Trials. Mark Schubert, who coaches Quance at South ern Cal, called the decision “a hairline judgment." “That call never would have been made in a World Championships or an Olympic Games,” he said. “I think it’s extremely unfortunate that call was made.” Tech’s Sassser gamers Player of the Year □ No Aggies were named to any of the SWC All-Star teams. DALLAS (AP) — Texas Tech forward Jason Sasser was named Wednesday the South west Conference’s player of the year by the leagues’ coaches. Sasser was fourth in the SWC in scoring (19.2 points a game), seventh in rebounding (8.2 a game) and seventh in field-goal percentage (46.3 percent). The 6-7 senior was No. 7 Texas Tech’s leading scorer in 13 of 25 games and was the leading rebounder eight times. “He’s our go-to guy,” Red Raiders coach James Dickey said. “He brings a tremendous I amount of intensity and emo- | tion to the game. Plus, he’s a I positive leader.” j Dickey was selected as the SWC coach of the year by his peers. He also was coach on the year in 1991-92. He guided the Red Raiders to a school-best 25-1 regular season record as they be came the first team to go through the SWC season unde feated since Houston in 1982-83. SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE TCU forward Damion Walker earned freshman of the year and newcomer of the year honors. Walker, a 6-7 forward, averaged 20.4 points a game and 8.8 re bounds this season. He ranks be hind only Shareef Abdur-Rahim of California in national scoring by a freshman. Joining Sasser on the first team were Reggie Freeman of Texas, Tommy McGhee of Rice, Tim Moore of Houston and Brian Skinner of Baylor. Freeman, a 6-6 junior guard, was the SWC scoring leader at 22.2 points per game. McGhee, a 6-2 senior guard, led the league in free-throw per centage (83.3) and 3-point per centage (44.5) and averaged 20.5 points a game. Moore, a 6-8 senior forward, was the league’s top rebounder (11.1 per game) and averaged 17.8 points and 1.6 blocked shots. Skinner, a 6-10 sophomore center, led the SWC in field goal percentage (60.8) and blocks (3.1 per game) and aver aged 17.7 points. The second team consisted of Sonny Alvarado of Texas, a 6-7 senior center; Tony Battie of Texas Tech, a 6-11 sophomore center; Kirk Ford of Houston, a 6-7 senior forward; Shaun Igoof Rice, a junior forward-center; and Walker.
