Page 4 • The Battalion Aggielife Thursday • March 7,1996 Exhibit displays unique photos of celebrities By James Francis The Battalion O ne definition of art is the human effort to imitate, supplement, alter or coun teract the work of nature. It comes in a variety of do mains, including paintings on canvas, sculptures in bronze and other works. But some of the best artistry is achieved by simple black and white photographs. Photography and art mesh to gether in the Louise Dahl-Wolfe exhibit at the J. Wayne Stark University Center Galleries, which is on display until April 21. The exhibit features 48 black and white gelatin silver prints, seven color facsimile letters, four contact prints and three tear sheets from Dahl-Wolfe’s archives (1936-1958). Dahl-Wolfe was born and raised in San Francisco. Her Nor wegian parents christened her L.E.A.D. for Louise Emma Au gusta Dahl because her mother heard it was good luck for a child’s name to spell a word. The luck paid off when Dahl-Wolfe began her 22-year career by taking pictures for Harper’s Bazaar. Through her work with Harper’s, Dahl-Wolfe published more than 600 photographs, 86 covers and thousands of black and white photographs. Most recognized for her fash ion photography, Dahl-Wolfe also took pictures of celebrities during the late ’30s to early ’50s. Ranging from Hunre Cronyn and Jessica Tandy to Orson Wells and Boris Karloff, Dahl-Wolfe captured the essence of these fa mous icons with the simple flash of a camera. Walking through the exhibit, one may see Fannie Brice, whose life was immortalized in the film Funny Girl, which starred Bar bra Streisand. Turning a corner may reveal Jimmy Durante, with his trade mark nose, though it is imper- ceivable with diagonal shadowing of light in black and white hues. There is also a three-photo- graph compilation of Dahl-Wolfe herself, as seen in her New York studio and her studio during Gwendolyn Struve, The Baitauon "Boris Karloff, 1941" is part of the "Louise Dahl-Wolfe" exhibit on display at the ). Wayne Stark University Center Galleries. World War II. What is not shown in the pho tograph is the Graflex Cooke lens that Dahl-Wolfe wore around her neck. It weighed seven pounds and resulted in Dahl-Wolfe receiv ing three wom-down vertebrae, a trip to the hospital and traction. After her incident with the lens, she placed her cameras on a tripod. Though she was a woman of ordinary means, Dahl-Wolfe be came a photographer with extra ordinary vision for lovers of pho tographic art. Catherine Hastedt, curator of the Stark Galleries, is just one admirer of art who said she has learned much about basic design and portrait photography from the Dahl-Wolfe exhibit. “They are excellent photos to study to learn how to take pictures,” she said. Hastedt also said the pho tographs fit directly into the over all aim of the art gallery. “We provide a changing series of exhibitions to broaden the versity curriculum,” Hastedt said, With exhibits coming and, ing every six to eight weeks, the art gallery harbors an interest for all who visit. “If you’re traveling in Texas and want to know what art ex hibits are out there, then call the gallery,” Hastedt said. m Thursday Friday Against the Grain, a country and western band, is playing at the Texas Hall of Fame.
