’96 baseball’s do-or-die year
W hen thinking of the up
coming Major League
Baseball season, I am
often reminded of a verse of po
etry by Robert Frost: “Two
roads diverged in a wood, and I
— I took the one less traveled
by, and that has made all the
difference.”
The Great American Pastime
is itself at a crossroads, sur
rounded by the wood of uncer
tainty. Poisoned by the labor
strife that canceled the World
Series only two Octobers ago,
baseball now stands on the
brink of its most important sea
son ever.
Last season, attendance plum
meted to dangerous levels,
prompting rumors of possible
franchise moves and slashed pay
rolls. Small-market teams such as
Pittsburgh and San Diego faced
dire straits when their tickets
sales couldn’t support their multi
million dollar payrolls.
Quite simply, the baseball-
loving public turned into the
baseball-indifferent public,
miffed about the greed and poli
ticking that turned the Great
American Pastime into the
Great American Pastprime.
Now baseball must win back
its once-loyal public and return
itself to the pantheon of pro
sports where it reigned for
decades. The climb back to the
top is filled with broken rungs
and false footholds, and the Pow
ers that Be in baseball must step
gingerly if they hope to regain
their financial security.
Baseball must follow the lead
of pro basketball and exploit its
athletes’ marketing potential
and blitz the media so much and
so cleverly that the public real
izes that baseball players are
people too, complete with per
sonalities and charisma.
The public needs to see Ken
Griffey Jr. and Frank Thomas as
visible as Shaquille O’Neal and
Michael Jordan. Show the two
AL sluggers circling the bases
with Bugs Bunny or hocking
Sprite, for Pete’s sake.
The sport must also find the
same kind of stability that pro
basketball, football and hockey
have reached in the past three
years. Fans will come back to
baseball only if they’re sure
that the players will take the
field year after year, season af
ter season without the threat of
a work stoppage.
Baseball has yet to reach a
new labor agreement that will
settle the key issues of free
agency, a salary cap and revenue
sharing. Until these problems
reach a resolution, they will fes
ter like a tumor that could deal
the mortal blow to an already
unstable sport.
What baseball must not do is
threaten its fans with the possi
bility of another prolonged labor
strike. The sport’s already fragile
state could not deal with the lost
revenue and bad press that would
accompany such a measure.
It also must not threaten to
play the franchise merry-go-
round that has plagued the Na
tional Football League for the
past two years. This is already
rearing its ugly head in Hous
ton, where Astros owner Dray
ton McLane Jr. has set atten
dance goals that must be met to
keep the team in Houston.
These sort of happenings only
thwart the efforts by baseball peo
ple to restore it to its prominence.
Now, the two roads stretch
out in the woods, and baseball
must make its decision. One
road leads to renewed promi
nence and a new lease on life for
the oldest American sport; the
other path leads to ruin for Abn
er Doubleday’s pride and joy.
The sport needs to choose care
fully — for that will make all the
difference.
Ex-CBAers lead depleted Rockets
□ Eldridge Recasner
and Sam Mack led
Houston's offense in a
win over Portland.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) —
CBA refugees Eldridge Recasner
and Sam Mack led injury-ravaged
Houston to its sixth straight vic
tory Tuesday night as the Rockets
held off the Portland Trail Blaz
ers 100-93.
Recasner scored Houston’s fi
nal eight points and the last six of
the game. His 14-footer with 35
seconds to go put the Rockets
ahead 96-93, then he made four

“They’re a balanced team
with good perimeter players,”
Harvey said. “They also have
some players who can put the
ball on the floor and do some
nice things inside.
“Hamilton has been a key
contributor
for them and
someone we’ll
have to watch
out for. Mc-
Callum has
had an excel
lent second
half of the
season and
presents an
other con
cern.”
History is Branch
on neither
team’s side. The Lady Aggies
have an all-time record of 3-9
in SWC tournament openers
while Rice has not won a game
there since 1983. But this is a
different year and an improved
Rice team.
Branch said Rice presents a
double-edged sword.
“Their five starters are all
good scorers,” Branch said. “Our
free throws in a row in the final
19 seconds to clinch the victory.
Mack, playing in his sixth
game since signing with Houston
on Feb. 22, made seven of 10 field
goals, 4-for-6 from 3-point range,
and scored 19 points, his most
since joining the team.
Hakeem Olajuwon was 11-for-
28 from the field and scored 23
points. He also had nine assists
and was in foul trouble much of
the second half.
Robert Horry added 19 points,
but only four in the second half.
Gary Trent scored 17 for Port
land, but left the game with a dis
located ring finger on his right
hand after grabbing an offensive
perimeters must contain their
guards and not allow any inside
penetration.
“We must stop their post
players, but that could be a
problem with the good three-
point shooters they have.”
If the Lady Aggies get past
Rice, they will face the winner
of the Texas-Texas Christian
match up. After tying Texas
Tech for the regular season co
championship, the Lady Long
horns were awarded the tourna
ment’s No. 1 seed by virtue of a
coin flip.
A&M, meanwhile, is on the
bubble in being awarded an at-
large bid into the NCAA Tour
nament. If the Lady Aggies fail
to win the SWC Classic, a win
over Rice and a strong showing
against likely-opponent Texas
in the second round would go a
long way in earning a bid.
“We realize we’re in a must-
win situation, so the best thing
we can do is take one game at a
time,” Branch said.
“You can always expect to feel
pressure in a situation like this,”
Harvey said. “That’s just some
thing we’ll have to deal with.
“(Rice is) a good basket
ball team and we have a lot
of respect for them and we
realize we have our work cut
out for us.”
rebound on a missed free throw
with 1:14 to go and Houston lead
ing 92-91. He lost the ball on the
play and Recasner made two free
throws with 1:08 to play to make
it 94-91.
Harvey Grant’s tip-in with 54
seconds left cut the lead to 94-93
and set up Recasner’s late run.
The Rockets, off to a 2-0 start
on a five-game road trip, led by as
many as 12 points in the third
quarter before a 10-0 run by Port
land caught Houston 74-74 on
Grant’s stuff with 11:02 to play.
Mack hit two 3-pointers as
Houston regained the lead 80-74
and ex-Blazer Mark Bryant made
four consecutive free throws.

world,” Assistant Men’s Coach
Jay Holmes said. “People who
made the finals in the Olympic
trials, but who did not make
the Olympic team, often post
times worthy of placing in the
Olympics. This is why we con
sider this one of the hardest
swim meets in the world.”
Some of the major competi
tors that DeWolf and Mastagni
will face include Matt Hooper
and Katie McClelland from
Texas, and Melvin Stuart from
North Carolina.
As of now, DeWolf enters
the meet ranked ninth in his
event while Mastagni is posted
at 24th in hers.
When asked if he felt the
pressure of facing many top
athletes DeWolf responded
calmly.
“My coaches and teammates
have been great through this
entire experience,” DeWolf
said. “I know the pool well and
have swam against many of
these people already. I don’t
have the pressure of being a fa
vorite so all I have to concen
trate on is making the finals
and work from there.”
