Cowboy Junkies lays down original
sound, uncompromised songwriting
By Amy Uptmor
The Battalion
The classic, bluesy rock style
the Cowboy Junkies made fa
mous with its album. The Trini
ty Sessions, is back, but this
time there’s a little more punch
to the music.
On Lay it Down, the Junkies’
sixth album and its first on Gef-
fen Records, listeners are treat
ed to a somewhat new presence
— that of strong backing music,
in particular of guitarist and pri
mary songwriter Michael Tim
mins. Gone are the days of lead
singer Margo Timmins’ wispy
voice protruding over barely au
dible background melodies. Now,
the music and the voice coincide,
giving the Junkies a more crisp
and all-together pleasant sound.
Nowhere is this change more
apparent than on “just want to
see,” an ode to the death of a
friend. Timmons’ hauntingly
beautiful voice falls faintly into
the pattern of a howling guitar
and tapping drums as she cries
out on her own death, “1 just
want to see what kills me.”
Album Review
Cowboy Junkies
Lay It Down
Gefffen Records
On a more positivet note, “an
gel mine” is one of the more up
beat, romantic songs the Junkies
have ever written. It is a song
about two not-so-perfect people
who see each other and their re-
Cowboy
lationship as perfection. The
songwriting here is
near-perfect, and the
combination of a
twangy steel guitar
and the constant
strumming of an
ID acoustic guitar give
ft’ l Timmins perfect ac-
companiment.
■1 * This album is not so
much a departure for
the Junkies as it is a
Junkies
positive sign of growth. Any dif
ferences heard on this album
take nothing away from the
Junkies’ sound of its last five al
bums, but rather, add a new di
mension of depth and instru
mentation to the band.
All the songs on Lay it Down
are good, but some songs tend to
blend into others as the band
falls into a sound rut. Neverthe
less, Lay it Down is great to lis
ten to from beginning to end.
Now in its 10th year as a
signed band producing records,
the Cowboy Junkies are still one
of the best-kept secrets in mod
ern music. Although its delicate
sounds are rarely heard on popu
lar radio, if sticking to an origi
nal, uncompromising style of
music and songwriting is what is
holding them back from main
stream acceptance, then I say
keep it up.
Lost Children confuses mind, stimulates eyes
By Wes Swift
The Battalion
Movie Review
Watching City of Lost
Children is a lot like
watching Pink Floyd’s
The Wall: no one can tell
exactly what’s going on,
but they’re pretty sure
it’s cool.
This little piece of ab
surd film from France reeks of
Tim Burton cinematography,
complete with intricate sets and
lush hues reminiscent of Batman
Forever. Unfortunately, the film
makers don’t have Burton’s talent
for screenwriting, throwing to
gether a plot as complex and frus
trating as a Rubik’s Cube.
The plot revolves around the
Strong One (Ron Perlman), a
carnival thug whose young
brother, Denree, is kidnapped

by The Chosen Ones, a reli
gious cult bent on destroying
all humanity.
The Chosen Ones sell kid
napped children to a group of ge
netically engineered clones who
use the children to find a soul for
their leader, Krank.
Meanwhile, the Strong One
teams up with a street urchin
named Miette to track down his
missing brother. What he finds
is a confusing realm of crimi
nals, mad scientists and freaks
who all want him, Miette and
Denree dead.
And if the events are confus
ing to the characters, just think
how the audience feels. Halfway
through the movie, I was
scratching my head, thinking,
“What in the world is going on?’
The plot is so scatterbrained
that viewers are perplexedly
every turn and twist. The film
seems like a slew of random im
ages that don’t mesh. Even in
the end, not everything is clear
and audiences have to guess just
what is going on.
The only bright spot for the
film is its dazzling imagery.lt
assaults the eyes and sparkles
with vivid colors and mind-bog
gling sets.
Someone, though, should have
reminded the director that he
should have included as many
morsels for the mind as he did for
the eyes. 'Phis film gave me a
headache, and that’s not a go
omen for a film.
