Howdy Weekend allows high school
students to experience Aggie life
□ More than 100 teens
came to A&M last
Thursday to sit in on
lectures and sleep in
residence hall rooms.

The Bati align
High school students from
around the state were on the
Texas A&M campus Thursday
through Saturday for Howdy
Weekend, a recruitment effort
sponsored by the Student Govern
ment High School Public Relations
and Recruitment Committee.
Pam Clark, HSPR2 co-chair
and a senior biomedical science
major, said high school sopho
mores, juniors and seniors
stayed in residence hall rooms
and attended lectures to get a
taste of college life.
“It is important for them to
see the difference between high
school and college, to see the en
tire picture of what it is going to
be like,” Clark said.
She said the program targets
sophomores and juniors, not just
seniors, so that younger stu
dents will realize the grades
they are earning will affect their
chances for admittance to A&M.
This was the second year
HSPR2 has held Howdy Week
end, and 140 high school students
attended. Last year, 28 students
attended the pilot program.
Cindy Schiffer, Howdy Weekend
co-chair and a junior agricultural
development major, said most ma
jor cities in Texas were represented
at the conference, as well as small
er towns like Conroe, Leakey, Tem
ple and Waco. Two students trav
eled from Dequeen, Ark.
Activities, such as mixers and
a luncheon, were scheduled to
entertain and inform the high
school students.
Chris Torn, a junior yell
leader, Jeff King, a sophomore
member of the Corps of Cadets
Company E-2, and Reveille at
tended Thursday’s mixer to lead
the students in a yell practice.
Friday, students attended a
luncheon with Dr. J. Malon
Southerland, vice president for
student affairs, who spoke about
Aggie spirit.
Students were also given the
opportunity to attend a class of
their choice.
Jessica Salinas, a sophomore
from San Juan who sat in on a
sociology lecture, said she was
impressed with the way the pro
fessor conducted his class.
“The professor was really
good with his students and
even made a point to say that
he was trying to connect the
studies with their life outside of
class,” she said.
Salinas said it did not bother
her that the class was large.
“I learned that as long as you
pay attention, the people around
you shouldn’t distract you
much,” she said.
The students stayed in resi
dence hall rooms with volunteer
hosts from HSPR2, Aggie Lead
ers of Tomorrow, Fish Aides, the
Aggie Fish Club, the Residence
Hall Association and other cam
pus organizations.
Salinas said she was surprised
by the size of the residence halls.
“The rooms are really small,
but I suppose that’s college life
and you adapt to it,” she said.
Participants said Howdy
Weekend was a valuable experi
ence that will help them make de
cisions about college in the future.
Annie Easley, a junior at
West Brook High School in
Beaumont, said she appreciated
her Howdy Weekend experience.
“I’ve always wanted to go to
A&M, and this was my chance to
see what it was really like and to
see how actual students perceive
the campus,” Easley said.
Salinas said she also gained in
sight about A&M this weekend.
“We know more about how
things are going on,” she said.
“Knowing the traditions at the
school makes you feel like you
are a part of it.
“We got an idea of how classes
run. We have an idea of how we
are going to apply to get into here."
Salinas said though she will
continue to look into other schools,
she thinks she will attend A&M.
“For other schools to have to
live up to this is going to be real
ly hard,” she said.
