The Texas A&M Women’s
Basketball Media Guide says
that junior forward Melissa
Rollerson’s favorite movie was
Higher Learning. Saturday
night, Rollerson taught the
Rice Owls a lesson about scor
ing inside.
Rollerson scored an A&M
career-high 18 points and
added eight rebounds, one shy
of her A&M high, as the Lady
Aggies rolled to a 74-60 win at
G. Rollie White Coliseum.
The forward, a transfer from
Trinity Valley Community Col
lege, was especially strong in
the second half, when she
poured in 10 points, including
nine from the free-throw line,
and grabbed three offensive
boards.
The Owls never led after the
Lady Aggies went up 10-8 ear
ly in the first half and clamped
down the defense, forcing 17
turnovers and limiting Rice to
39.7 percent shooting.
The win improves the Ag
gies’ record to 15-9 overall and
6-5 in the Southwest Confer
ence, while the Owls dropped
to 11-12 overall, 4-7 in confer
ence play.
The Lady Aggies dominated
the game, leading by as many
as 17 points early in the sec
ond half before Rice answered
with two streaks of eight
points.
But A&M senior guard Lisa
Branch stopped the Owls
comeback effort twice to en
sure the Lady Aggies’ sixth
conference victory.
With the Lady Aggies lead
ing 62-58, Branch blew past

Rice senior guard Kim
LaLonde and drove to the bas
ket, scoring an easy layup and
stopping one of the Owls’
eight-point runs.
Two possessions later,
Branch canned a three-pointer
with 1:13 to play, putting the
game out of reach for the Owls.
Branch finished the game with
23 points and nine rebounds,
both game highs.
Senior center Angel Spinks
added 17 points for the Lady
Aggies, including 10 in the
first half as the Lady Aggies
jumped out to a 40-33 halftime
lead.
□ The USOC agreed to
order all sports to stage
drug tests.
TAMPA, Fla (AP) — Two ma
jor rules changes involving the be
havior of Olympic athletes — ran
dom drug testing and a code of
conduct — received preliminary
approval Sunday from the U.S.
Olympic Committee.
The USOC’s governing execu
tive committee agreed in principle
to order all Olympic sports to
stage out-of-competition drug
tests on short notice. The commit
tee will pick up the entire $1.5
million annual pricetag for the
package, the toughest anti-doping
program in the world.
It also gave a tentative ur;
changes in the code of conduct [j
U.S. Olympic athletes. The re:
sion — sparked by embarrassiv
incidents at the last two Games-
would give the USOC control me
America’s Olympians up toti
days before entry deadlines at;
would force all team members:
accept the code without changi
or be barred from the squad.
While final review from all
letes and individual sports miii
still be completed next montli
officials said they were certai:
both proposals would be read]
for adoption when the ful
USOC board meets in SanDieg
in April and could be impli
mented in time for the Summt
Games in Atlanta.
The only
bright spots
for the Owls
came from ju
nior center
D e b i
Williams, who
came off the
bench to score
17 points, us

ers in the
paint.
Branch
LaLonde chipped in another
12 points and nine assists and
sophomore guard Gina
Cafagna added 12 points.
Rice used a 4-for-7 perfor
mance behind the three-point
line in the first half to stay
close in the game, even taking
a quick 8-6 lead in the first few
minutes of the game.
Then Spinks came alive,
scoring 10 points on 5-of-7
shooting, including a stum
bling drive into the lane that
capped an eight-point run and
gave the Aggies a 23-13 lead
that it never surrendered for
the rest of the game.
The second half started with
much of the same, with A&M
scoring 10 of the first 12 points
and cruising to a 52-35 lead. The
Owls never got closer than six
points the rest of the game.
