When I heard it, memories came rushing back to me as I sang every word. I had just Jonathan Faber Columnist turned on the television after a long day at class when I heard the most beautiful notes and lyrics ever. It was Waylon Jennings singing “Good Old Boys,” and this meant The Dukes of Haz- zard was on. Everyone remembers the ba sic premise of the show. The two Duke cousins, Bo and Luke, lived in Hazzard County where they liked to drive fast, run moonshine and torment the local police. The Duke boys lived on a farm with Uncle Jesse and Daisy. The real star of the show wasn’t a person at all, however. The General Lee was their amazing orange car that stole the show every week as the Duke boys jumped it over every hill, valley or construction site in the county. I always wondered how Bo and Luke could speed down a dirt road and hide behind a couple of trees in an orange car without Rosco P. Coltraine see ing them as he sped by. Like I said, it’s amazing. The Dukes of Hazzard was my favorite show growing up. My parents bought me The Dukes of Hazzard pajamas, The Dukes of Hazzard sheets and pillowcases, The Dukes of Haz zard remote con trolled General Lee and my per sonal favorite, The Dukes of Hazzard slot rac ing set with the death-defying jump in the mid dle. You could say I was nutty over the show. My friends and I would al ways play The Dukes of Haz zard game during recess at school. In case you are unfa miliar with the game, I’ll ex plain it to you. It’s actually pretty simple. Two kids would play Bo and I think Rosco's dog Flash was relat ed to some character, but I may be wrong. Luke (I was always Bo), two more would be Rosco and his deputy Enos Straitt, and of course, people would fill the spots for Daisy, Un cle Jesse, Boss Hogg and Cooter the mechanic. Basically, Bo and Luke had to try to save Daisy from the evil clutches of Hogg while be ing chased by the law. Uncle Jesse got the boys out of jail every day, and Cooter had to fix the imaginary General Lee whenever it broke down. Nutty, I tell you. Every week I looked forward to watching the show, until it suddenly went off the air. After some mourning, I eventually got on with my life. Imagine my surprise last week when I turned to TNN- for the first time ever, by the way — and heard the song. Now that I’ve seen a few episodes, I’ve noticed a fewthinjs I didn’t realize 10 years ago. First and foremost, Daisyis a babe. She inadvertently started a fashion movement with those “Daisy Dukes” she always wore. Second, I noticed everyone in Hazzard County seemed to be related. Bo, Luke and Daisy were cousins, Hogg was married to Rosco’s sister, and every person that came into Haz zard seemed to long-lost cousin of Uncle Jesse. The General Lee got more abuse than any car I’ve ever seen, yet it was always in per fect running condition and had a fresh coat of wax. Amazing. Not only is the show on in reruns now, but it’s on twice a day! So if anyone needs meatd p.m. or 6 p.m., I’ll be easy to find.
