what my non-Aggie neigh-
JL bor kept telling my sister
and l about Aggies, especially Ag
gies at the baseball games.
To someone who has never been
to an Aggie baseball game, we
probably do seem a little weird. So,
I decided to compile a list of some
things-to-do while at a baseball
game for those who may be attend
ing a game for the first time.
1. NEVER sit in the first row of
the second deck on the first-base
side. ’Phis section is “reserved” for
the notorious Olsen Field “Bag
gies.” If you’ve been to a baseball
game in the past five years, you
know the group I’m talking about.
I’ve never seen it happen, but I
would venture to guess that if an
“outsider” was found sitting in
“their spot,” he or she would proba
bly be kindly escorted to the “regu
lar Aggie baseball fan” section.
2. Make up cool and insulting
names for all of the players on the
opposing team to yell while they
are at bat. The funnier and more
distasteful, the better. These
names are usually made up by
looking at the player’s last name
and coming up with something that
rhymes or looking at the player's
build. For example, “Fat Albert” for
a beefy player.
3. When an opposing team's
player gets up to bat, always count
his practice swings out loud, fol
lowed by the insulting name you’ve
come up with, like “One Fat Albert,
two Fat Albert, etc...”
4. Always bring a supply of food
to wave at the other teams “beefy”
players. Twinkies work well.
5. If an opposing player makes
an error, call him stupid for the re
mainder of the game. If he’s batting
call him stupid, if he’s walking
back to the dugout call him stupid,
if he makes a move call him stupid
— really. It never gets old.
6. Resist, no matter how hard it
is, the urge to push a “Raggie” over
the railing when they are bent ovei
it yelling at the opposing team.
7. If you catch a ball fouled up
into the stands, hide it from the Di
amond Darlings. Then when they
come up into the stands to get it,
point in another direction while
looking as innocent as you can.
This get’s them every time!
8. Along the same lines, if a ball
is fouled up onto the net behind
home plate, start yelling “pick it
up” before it even hits the ground.
Then clap when it’s picked up.
9. Resist urges to throw caught
foul ball at “Raggies.”
10. When the umpire bends over
to sweep off home plate, start
yelling, “ Rtch it now.” You never
know when a pitcher might fall for
this.
11. When the opposing team's
catcher walks to the pitcher’s
mound to talk to the pitcher, start
yelling, “Touch his butt”, or better
yet, if you have cash on you get it
out and start waving it at the play
ers while whistling cat calls.
12. If the opposing team’s coach
steps even an inch out of the
coach’s box by first base, start
yelling, “Get in the box, coach” un
til one of two things happens: he ei
ther gets back into the box or he
flips you off behind his back.
13. Always bring money and an
appetite to 25-cent hot dog night.
Where else can you get 3 hot dogs
and a Coke for a dollar?
14. Resist urges to throw 25-
cent hot dog at “Raggies.”
15. Always be one of the first
people through the gate because
you get all kinds of cool prizes like
koozies and squirt bottles, or better
yet an Aggie baseball seat cushion
or batting helmet.
16. Register you name in the
“Name Game” drawing as many
times as you can. If it’s a Tuesday
afternoon game and there are only
1500 hundred people in the stands
and you’ve registered your name
200 times, chances are you’re going
to win.
17. Wave at all passing trains.
18. When opposing team’s coach
goes to the pitcher’s mound to talk
to the pitcher start chanting, “Take
him out, keep him in.”
19. If the opposing team’s pitch
er pitches a ball that is short, start
yelling “Scoot up.”
20. Always point toward the out
field when Jeff Bailey, Chad Allen
and other power hitters get up.
I’m sure I left some things out,
but you’ll pick those up on your
own. You are now ready to experi
ence your first Aggie baseball
game. See ya at Olsen.
