Page 10 • The Battalion Wednesday • February?, 1% Tucker Continued from Page 7 Tucker takes pride in play ing quality defense and be lieves her prowess as a defend er stems from her commitment to hard work. “Everybody is going to have an off night shooting the ball from time to time, but you can always make it a point to play good defense,” Tucker said. “There’s absolutely no excuse for not playing good defense because all it takes is effort and hustle.” But don’t let Tucker fool you, she’s also a steady per former on the offensive end of the court. An excellent drib bler and passer with great court awareness, she has no problem spearheading the Lady Aggie attack. Tucker has also never been one to shy away from firing a bomb from long-range when the shot is open. For proof, go back to Jan. 24 when A&M hosted the Univer sity of Houston. Tucker shot a sizzling 71 percent from the floor that night, scorching the Lady Cougars with a career- high 28 points to help the Lady Aggies break a three- game Southwest Conference losing streak. “That was definitely a great night for me shooting-wise,” Tucker said. “It just seemed like I was getting open and getting the pass from my teammates. I’m not sure I can do that kind of thing every night, but if I’m open, I’m defi nitely going to take the shot.” Voted one of the three cap tains by her teammates before the beginning of the season. Tucker has stepped up and taken more of a leadership role on the team; however, she says she tries to lead more by actions than words. “I’m not one of the more vo cal people on the team, so I try to set an example with the way I work and the way I play on the court,” Tucker said. “Hopefully, that serves as something the underclassman can follow.” They could do a whole lot worse following someone else. Davis Continued from Page 7 and the points he has, is proba bly one of the most productive players,” Barone said. “He has quality minutes and gives us quality pro duction. We will give him as many min utes as he can handle.” One of the concerns that the coaching staff has about Davis is his strength and condi tioning. How ever, this is a Davis common concern that most coaches have about freshmen. “He needs to develop his strength,” Barone said. “He will be a quality Big 12 talent be cause of his high skill level, but his weight and stamina needs to be worked on.” Despite concerns about Davis’ strength, he has been able to put together back-to-back quali ty games. Against Texas Christ ian University last week, Davis scored 21 points and set career- highs with 13 rebounds and six blocked shots. His six blocks were the most ever by an A&M freshman. “I just wanted to perform my best,” Davis said. “I know I was capable of doing it. It was just a matter of time.” In the Aggies’ next game against Southern Methodist University, Davis had 13 points and three blocked shots. “His success is due to two things,” Barone said. “First, his athletic skills and second, he is a young man who is capable of exploiting his offensive skills on the court.” With the success that Davis has had so far, he hopes that he will only improve and go on to become a professional basket ball player. “I hope to play after college,” Davis said. “But if I don’t, I have my education to fall back on. College is a little more diffi cult than high school, but I think I’m handling it pretty well.” Barkley hits for 35 as Suns set on Chicago □ Phoenix's 106-96 win gave the Bulls their first two-game losing streak of the season. PHOENIX (AP) — Sudden ly, the Chicago Bulls are on a losing streak. And suddenly, Charles Barkley and the Phoenix Suns are looking like an NBA power again. Barkley scored 35 points as the Suns handed the Bulls just their fifth loss of the season — but their second in three nights, 106-96 Tuesday night. Elliot Perry broke a 96-96 tie with two free throws and a jumper, then Barkley sealed the victory by stealing an in bounds pass for a dunk. Barkley had two free throws with 30.8 seconds remaining after he was fouled following the last of his 16 rebounds. Michael Jordan scored l2of his 28 points in the final sis minutes of the fourth quarter, helping the Bulls come from as many as nine points behind to tie it at 93 and 96. But, just as in their loss at Den ver on Sun day that snapped an 18-game win ning streak, the Bulls (41-5) couldn’t sus tain the momentum. Jordan missed 5 of 11 free throws in the same span.
