game dull
Rea
T
W hether you’re a baskets
fan or not, everybody lis
heard about Dennis Rd
man, the eccentric, outrageoii:
“never follow the rules,” font®
who plays for the Chicago B
Well, this year, he is stirring;
even more dust after finding Din
that he didn’t make the NBAAI
Star team as a reserve last week
Apparently, league coaches ami
NBA Commissioner David Sterr.
felt that Rodman would ruinth
image of the game because of
crazy antics and wild behavior.
Rodman was badly snubbei
and for no apparent reason.
If the All-Star game is
posed to consist of the best playm
in each conference, then thereii
no reason why Rodman should not
have been picked as a reserve.
Not only does he lead the
league with 14.4 rebounds per
game, a category he has lead the
last four years, but he has also
contributed to the Bulls’ success.
So far, they have a 41-4 recori
and have the opportunity to be the
first team in league historyto
break the 70-win mark.
Just because Rodman is
obnoxious and wants the attention
of all the fans during games
n’t mean that he cannot back up
his attitude with a little action.
Of course, he may be the first to
tell people he is a great player,
that is no reason to punish himhy
keeping him off the All-Star team
As far as I’m concerned, Rot
man puts some entertainment i
professional basketball. In fact,
look forward to seeing what color
his hair will be for the next game
Nonetheless, if his colorful per
sonality is going to scare NBAoffi
cials and coaches, then I think!
they should get jobs working for af
more conservative sport like golf.
Basketball is an action-packed
game and requires trufy gr«c \
players come alive before, duri/iy
and after each game.
In other words, the new basket-
ball era is not producing quiet and
cooperative players, rather players
that are doing and acting the way
they want to, and not how every
one expects them to.
Is it his fault that he actually
wants to have fun when he plays?
As far as I’m concerned, Rod-
man deserves a spot on the team
just as much as Patrick Ewing and
Alonzo Mourning do.
They have had great seasons,
but so has Rodman.
Overall, it is a total injustice to
the game by leaving him out.
All I can say is that I am proud
of the way he handled the news,
and I’m sure all of his fans are
proud of his words on the matter.
“A guy like me, who doesn’t fol
low the rules, they make sure they
put me aside,” Rodman said.
“I wish the NBA commissioner
would come talk to me like a man

For what it’s worth, better luck

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP)-
George Gervin and David Thomp
son finally put their fierce scoring
rivalry to rest Monday. They
were elected — together — to the
Basketball Hall of Fame.
The other inductees were
UCLA and Los Angeles Lakers
star Gail Goodrich, Olympic
champion Nancy Lieberman-
Cline, the high-scoring George
Yardley and the late Kresimir
Cosic of Croatia.
The often-controversial Jerry
Tarkanian, who owns the best
winning percentage among col
lege coaches, was passed over.
The scoring competition be
tween Gervin and Thompson
reached its height on April 9,
1978, as each was grasping at the
league scoring title with one
game left. Thompson scored 73
points for Denver to take the
lead. But a few hours later,
Gervin scored 63 for San Antonio,
to win the title that season.
