Feb. 3 8:00 p.m. At Copasetic Cafe Page 6 •The Battalion Jim’s Food Mart “We have aU your party needs!” University at Texas Ave. ! k H Tunnels Continued from Page 1 “When somebody wants the water cut off in a particular build ing, we go into the tunnels and take care of it,” Kuder said. He said most of the older build ings on campus have steam tun nels underneath them, while lines for newer buildings are placed in the ground. Many tunnels are square concrete spaces, some as small .. as 6 feet wide and 6 feet high. The tunnels run almost the en tire length of the main campus, leaving the power plant from the east and the west and extending from Sbisa Dining Hall and Mili tary Walk to the Memorial Stu dent Center. The pipes also run under Cain Dining Hall, G. Rollie White Coli seum, the 12 residence halls and Sterling Evans Library. The tunnels remain locked at all times, mainly due to problems with trespassing and theft. Kuder and Smith said many students have entered tunnels and trashed them. The tunnels are full of graffiti. In addition, because the tun nels run beneath many buildings on campus, classroom and office items have been stolen and smug gled out through the tunnels. “Through the years, we’ve had to lock up the tunnels because computers would come up miss ing,” Kuder said. “Students used The Battalion Fat Pi® Graffiti signals the entrance to one of the steam tunnels under the campus. These gates are locked and have an alarm, however, each semester some students manage to get in. to get in the tunnels really bad.” Smith said the tunnels are locked to keep students out of danger. “We’re trying to keep folks out of there for their safety,” he said. “There are hazards of all kinds in there.” To prevent students from tres passing, the tunnel passages are equipped with motion detectors and sensors. But each semester some stu dents manage to explore the tun nels without getting caught. One student, who will remain anonymous, said he and some of his friends have traveled through the tunnels. The tunnels often open into large rooms where old couches have been placed by students, he said. “A while back, students would go down there just to hang out,” he said. "But it’s dangerous, anil people can get hurt. "The tunnels are tall enough in most places to walk around ...anil it is pretty warm.” The student added that A&M legends say the steam tunnels used to be part of the Under ground Railroad, and the tunnels from Sbisa to Duncan Dining Center were once used to hide slaves escaping to freedom. 846-5007 Squadron 12 Corps of Cadets is the organization of the month.
