mprovements and other expenses,
alliham said, but the city is giving
way more than ever before to citi-
ens. The city used to retain 60 per-
ent of savings.
The average residential customer paid
1.74 per month for utility bills in 1986
[twill pay only $67.43 per month at
e 1996 rates.
Calliham said the rate reduction
should dispel the myth that College Sta
tion’s utilities are more expensive than
those of Bryan and other Texas cities.
Even before the rate reduction. Col
lege Station residents were paying
slightly less for 1,000 kilowatt hours of
electricity than Bryan residents, Calli
ham said.
The reduction will widen the gap
even further.
“I hope the perception will change, be
cause the rates definitely have,” Calli
ham said.
Somehow, despite the decreased elec
tricity rates, some students find them
selves paying more than the residential
average every month.
Calliham said those students should
contact the city’s energy conservation of
fice at 764-3724 for a free energy audit.
“We feel an obligation to encourage
students to call our energy office to let us
help them as to why their energy bill is
high,” she said.

Glenn Thompson, a sophomore
industrial engineering major,
said the proposed rent increase
seems reasonable.
“I like the idea of automatically
getting cable and an ethernet con
nection without having to subscribe
to anything,” he said.
In other business, RHA:
• Decided to offer Texas A&M
students temporary storage
space between the spring and
summer semesters.
For a $50 fee, students can
rent a room in either Spence or
Briggs Hall to store their posses
sions to offset the inconvenience
of having to take everything
home at once.
•Announced that Briggs Hall,
in which women now live, will re
turn to its former status as Corps
of Cadets housing for the fall se
mester due to an increase in
Corps membership.
