But according to Bill Varvel, the man with the answers is none other than H.B. Zachry, Class of ’22. Zachry’s mission statement has been Varvel’s driving influ ence throughout his career. Varvel, who holds degrees from A&M in chemical, petroleum and mechanical engineering, began tutoring on campus in 1987 while he was still an undergraduate student. For a while, Varvel ren dered his services in Rudder Au ditorium, the Animal Industries Building and the Blocker Build ing. In 1991, A+ Tutoring moved to its present location on Univer sity Drive. Although the move offcampus was part of a joint decision with the University, Varvel said A&M is generally supportive of his tu toring service. “They work with us to try to help the students learn as much as they can to further their educa tion,” he said. “I like helping the kids,” Varvel said. “What’s important is helping students develop to their full po tential and making the most of their lives.” This dedication is inspired by Zachry’s views on teaching, Varvel said. Zachry’s mission statement, delivered at the Zachry Engineer ing Center dedication on March 16, 1972, is found at the entrance of the building. “I pledge all my efforts with yours that Texas A&M may build the men who will make this state's, this nation’s place in the sun ever brighter,” Zachry said. “To reach this objective, we must help each student find within himself: that security, as a means, is essential to life, but as an end, it is a form of death.” "What's important is helping stu dents develop to their full potential." — Bill Varvel “Mr. Biir “Intelligence never urges man to action,” Zachry contin ued. “Only patriotism, courage, ambition, self-sacrifice, hate, fear, love can fuse with life the product of the mind. Life is measured in deeds, not years; he lives longest who does the most, and acts the noblest.” Varvel was impressed by what Zachry, who began a large Texas- based contracting corporation, gave to his alma mater. “I can’t give [an engineering center] back, so that’s why I’m do ing what I’m doing,” he said. Varvel’s customers like what he gives. Marty Vahlenkamp, a junior animal science major who goes to A+ Tutoring for help with Physics 202, said Varvel provides a help ful supplement to class. “Bill shows you lots of exam ples, to where you can actually see how it applies to problems, whereas professors just derive equations and don’t really show examples so you know how it works,” Vahlenkamp said. Megan Cox, a junior anim science major who also goestol Tutoring for help with 202, said Varvel’s teachingsti helps her. “We still go to class, professors just spend the time deriving the equatim whereas Bill will getinai say,"Here’st! -.nppuj let’s work pn n cnl o(. i lems you're goi v _ to see on yoi gvOld ' ’ tests,”’Cox said m B r a d le C0ll<1p y Maldonado, J^dgCt freshman civil engineering!! jor, went to A+ Tutoring la \yASHl semester for help in Chemist! r j n g a mi 101, and he now attends Chea granc | ba! istry 102 sessions. We’ll see.” But if The Nixons had their way, Maloy said they would just play live, rather than release more albums. “It’s the biggest part (of being a band) for us,” he said. “ the album, we were just p anywhere we could. “If we had to choose, we would just play, but I guess we have to record albums.” Care Plus offers an easy way to have beautiful teeth votes this offer hopes of s rats supp there is bi GOP prop Real l The adm clysmic f( unless ( debt limi porary s dozens ol Friday, v AI] □ Alth have li virus, actual F or anyone interested in improving their appearance quickly and easily, listen up. Personally, while here at A&M, my teeth are something I have unfortunately ignored, other dian the usual brushing and Listerine. 1 avoid College Station water at all costs, I do not drink mudi coffee, and I quit smoking cigarettes after I found out it was bad for your lungs. Yet I knew my teeth could be whiter I didn’t know what to do, so I called Dr.. Neal Kruger of Care Plus Qinics and he had tire solution to make my pearly whites truly white. I looked into having my teeth whitened after hearing some promising testimony from friends. Cecilia Felderhoff, Class of 1988, says, “One of my best friends dads is a dentist, and her teetli were the prettiest I have ever seen. 1 wanted teeth like hers, so I had my teedi worked on by Dr. Kruger. It really was so easy, and my teeth look so much better.” I made an appointment. Here’s what happened: 1. Dr. Kruger explained how (he Whitening Program works, and how you can have your top teeth whitened, bottom teedi whitened, or both. 2. Your teedi are modeled for the fitted tray you wear when you sleep, study, or whatever you want to do for a couple of hours. 3. You wear die tray when you feel like it for the next two weeks. Although I was initially hesitant, the process itself is simple, and the results are awesome. My teedi have not been this white since I was in kindergarten, and it costs much less than you would guess. Also, don’t waste your cash on the “store- bought” whitening systems. The results do not compare to professional care. WAS! scientisi chimpai in testir Sinct 100 chi the AT about I get inf develop Noubtec Care Plus Dental Centers 241 IB S.
