P a 8 e 5 * He Terrible Tori Pete ruined by mediocre lyrics, vocals By Amy Uptmor The Battalion Tori Amos’ new album, Boys for Pele, is a perplexing album to listen to, to say the least. On one hand, it’s a beautiful ly melodic album by one of mu sic’s most mysterious leading women, so a certain level of quality is a given. And that level of quality does appear in small doses, but unfortunately this album is such a step down from Amos’ previous albums that it doesn’t even deserve to sit on the CD rack next to Little Earthquakes or Under the Pink. Boys for Pele is Amos’ first self-produced album, which represents a bold, although not entirely wise, move on her part. This 18-track album is a la bor of love to sit through, even for the most devout Amos fans. That could possibly be attrib uted to the fact that Amos’ strongest, most endearing qual ities are almost impossible to find on Boys for Pele. Although this is one of Amos’ most beautiful albums musical ly speaking, with harpsichord backing her on more than half the tracks, her infamous song writing is absent. Even worse, Amos’ ethereal Amos voice often lacks the intensity she showed in the past. The result is that Boys for Pele is almo; a waste of an album, because when Amos' songwriting skills at beautiful voice are taken away, little is left to fall back on. There are some redeeming moments. The album’s first ail gle, “Caught a Lite Sneeze,” a witty little broken-heartedsoi with a small reference to Nine Inch Nails (“dreamed a little dream / made my own pretty hate machine”). This song represents every thing that is wonderful about Tori Amos, and everything that is missing on most of the other tracks on this album. A particularly low point the album is "In the Springtime of His Voodoo,” a jazzy song that makes about as much sense as its title. Of course, Amos is known for being a bit eccentric, but she crosses the line here. Even worse, her voice is par ticularly weak on this song,an element that could be blamed on poor production by Amos, rather than poor singing. And when both Amos’voice and songwriting skills are tak en away, little is left to relyon. The artwork for this album, which includes Amos in hole- caustal and/ or backwoods, red neck scenes in almost every photo, suggests that Amos in tended for this to be a disturb ing album. She couldn’thave realized how accurate that thought would be. But rather than being a ground-breaking, thought-pro voking portrait of Amos’growth as a musician, Boys for Peleli an unfortunate step back for this talented singer. Tori, you can do much better than this. Here’s hoping that Boys for Pele will just be a momentary lapse in Amos’ career, rather than a sign of things to come. Boys for Pele may sound nkf on the surface, but there’s Uttl beyond the surface to look to. Floppy Joe's Computer Store FREE One Year Membership.
