Building, Texas And they said it couldn’t be done. Believe it or not, Tom Arnold really can act — more over, he’s funny. In his latest film, Big Bully, directed by Steve Miner {For mer Young), Arnold teams up with Rick Moranis in a refresh ingly innocent portrayal of small town predator and prey. The story, written by Mark Steven Johnson {Grumpy Old Men), centers on young Davey Leary (Moranis). Davey is relentlessly pursued by the school bully, Roscoe Bigger (Arnold), who is better known to his 9-year-old vic tims as “Fang.” After several black eyes and busted lips, Davey decides he’s had enough. Fortune provides him with a chance to get even by turning Roscoe in to the local authorities for the bully’s in volvement in a school scandal. Before Roscoe can return, Davey’s family is transferred from Min nesota to California, providing an escape. Now a famous novelist, Davey returns home to discover that Roscoe’s life has been virtually de stroyed by an extended term in re form school. In addition to his guilt, Davey is consumed by his childhood fear of Roscoe’s beatings. When Roscoe dis covers Davey’s identity, he’s filled with the same giddiness he felt in grade school. And the games begin anew. But times have changed, and Dav- ey and Roscoe must learn to face one another on adult turf. Moranis contributes his standard comedic performance, yet he ad- Big Bully Starring Rick Moranis and Tom Arnold Directed by Steve Miner Rated PG Playing at Post Oak Mall ^ 'A' * (out of fiveJ^OTawwe*^ vances somewhat from his previous roles {Parenthood, Honey I Shrunk the Kids). Although still the geeky, suburban dad, Moranis develops a more believable character than in past films. Advancing more than Moranis, Arnold emerges from his acclaimed success for his support ing role in True Lies. He has clear ly matured be yond the adolescence of the Rosanne era and comfortably as sumed a more se date approach to acting. Arnold is still goofy, but now he’s actually fun ny rather than just an noying. The film could be the start of a legitimate career in comedy for Arnold. The comedic duo is backed by a strong supporting cast. Carol Kane plays Roscoe’s nagging wife with an affinity for talk shows and patent leather. Don Knotts perfects the role of the perpetually old principal who continues to resolve problems be tween Davey and Roscoe. Playing on nostalgia, Big Bully recalls a time of atomic wedgies, stolen lunch money and Evil Knieval wind-up toys. At the same time, the film offers insight into the problems of today’s schoolyard, albeit in a more gentle and shel tered manner. The end result finds adults acting like children, kids becoming grown-ups and everyone learning a valuable lesson. j Rick Moranis and Tom Arnold are predator and prey in Big Bully. I Roses brings fairy tale romance to life Mom Review Starring Christian Slater and Mary Stuart Masterson Directed by Michael Goldenberg Rated PG Playing at Hollywood 1G ** 1/2 (out olJBwe)_ By Stephanie Christopher The Battalion There are many things in life that aren’t possible. Some may agree that storybook ro mances aren’t possible and that love can sometimes be im possible to find. However, Bed of Roses is all that and more. The movie starts out at a fast pace. Lisa (Mary Stuart Master- son), is a sophisticated lady who has nothing on her mind except work, while on the other hand, Lewis (Christian Slater) is the king on the white horse. Lisa is a New York bank in vestor who just received her first big break as a vice presi dent when she receives a dis turbing phone call saying that her father has passed away. When Lisa comes home that evening, she is startled to find out that her gold fish is also dead. She begins to fall apart as she is looking out her apart ment window. This is where it happened. Lewis happened to be walking down the street when he looked up and saw Lisa standing in the window. Lisa was so upset that she decided to let her feelings go and she stood next to the win dow and broke down. When Lewis saw Lisa, he could not understand what could possibly make her so sad. This was the day Lewis fell in love with Lisa. The next, day, Lisa re ceives flowers from a secret admirer — Lewis. After a bad day leaves her filled with exhaustion, Lisa’s boss demands that she takes a few days off. So Lisa immediately be comes interested in who sent her flowers. After a lot of inves tigating, she is lead back to Lewis, and the rest of the movie is a story in itself. Lisa and Lewis become in separable after they fall head over heals in love. However, Lisa has problems that come between her and Lewis. Before Lisa can give Lewis what he wants, she must deal with the problems, and the best way for her to do that is on her own. The story is gooey and filled with love, but at the same time, it seems unbelievable. It’s not every day that someone Lewis (Christian Slater) and Lisa (Mary Stuart Masterson) find romance in Bed of Roses. walks into your life and gives you all that you have ever dreamed of, but that is what Lewis did for Lisa. The movie is not just a film for women. It is a film for all people. It is true that Bed of Roses can make people fall in love all over again if you see it with that special person. When it comes down to the movie, one thing is learned — life can be more than a fairy tale, but along the way, that tale will face many challenges. All things are possible, and if you do not rush love, then your love can blossom as it did in Bed of Roses. Sci-fi movie screams for plot and originality Mov/£ Review Screamers Starring Peter Weller, Jennifer Rubin and Andy Lauer Directed by Christian Duguay Rated R Playing at Hollj By Wes Swift The Battalion Screamers proves that if a film combines the best ele ments of Terminator 2, Dune and Critters, it can still turn into a load of crap. This two hour-long futuristic marathon dredges through enough cliches to fill a book about what not to do when mak ing a science fiction movie. The film has as much originality as an Elvis impersonator. It’s the year A.D. 2078 on the distant mining planet of Sirius 6B, and a civil war rages between the Alliance, a coalition of miners and scien tists, and the New Economic Block, a powerful corporation controlling the mines. The Alliance has created the perfect weapon in its war with the NEB: the Screamers) burrowing, blade-wielding machines that hunt down all enemy life forms. Peter Weller plays Col. Joseph Hepdricksson, the bat tle-tough leader of the Al liance forces on Sirius 6B. Fed up with the war and the de struction that has accompa nied it, Hendricks- son sets out across the planet’s scarred surface to negotiate peace with the NEB forces. But the journey turns deadly as Hendricksson learns that the Screamers are becoming more and more so phisticated and deadly (a la Ter minator 2). The only chance of survival lies in the Alliance bunker, where Hendriksson and band of rag-tag soldiers hope to mount a defensive stand. Watching Screamers is like watching the Super Bowl: it looks new and improved, but as the minutes tick by, you’re sure that you’ve seen it before. The sand-dwelling Scream ers conjure memories of Crit ters’ munching furballs. The more advanced Screamers re semble the Terminator. The civil war bit seems vaguely Dune—esque. Nothing in Screamers is new or interesting. The screenwrit ers tack on an insulting ro- mancq/morality tale at the end between Hendriksson and Jessi ca (Jennifer Rubin), a beautiful freelance soldier. Maybe director Chris Duguay should focus more on the plot and on acting than relying on the gore and special effects. (Al though the Screamers are cliched, they do look cool.) Audiences will leave Scream ers screaming — but not for the right reason. Jessica (Jennifer Rubin) clings to Col. Hendricksson (Peter Weller) in the futuristic sci-fi Screamers.
