We would like to commend
Chris Stidvent on his outstanding
columns in The Battalion. We
have thoroughly enjoyed his
unique and often humorous views
of A&M life.
It takes great deal of courage
to present a dissenting opinion to
the ultra-conservative, close-
minded, name-calling “Aggies”
who often write in furiously de
fending their beloved traditions.
Often times these confused in
dividuals are mindlessly and
blindly regurgitating the same
old cliches such as “Obviously you
don’t bleed maroon.” While Chris
may not bleed maroon, he exem
plifies the individuality and
strength of character that has al
ways been associated with Texas
A&M Students. We hope that
Chris and The Battalion continue
to publish columns that challenge
many of A&M’s mainstream
views. Gig ‘em Chris!
and directors. The activities that
Stidvent claimed were usual for
counselors are neither promoted
nor condoned by the organization.
Drinking with your camp and
scamming on freshman are not
acceptable and are dealt with se
verely if they occur.
For many incoming freshmen,
Fish Camp is the most significant
part of their transition to Texas
A&M. It is also a huge amount of
work to put it together. I think
Chris owes an apology to all of
those past and present who have
dedicated their talents to making
Fish Camp the unique organiza
tion that it is.
Phr those of you who have had
the courage to try out for coun
selor this year, good for you.

Attack on Fish
Camp is arrogant
Although I am reluctant to
write this because I know this is
exactly the kind of reaction that
he wants, I am writing in re
sponse to Chris Stidvent’s column
on Fish Camp.
It is very sad that some people
are arrogant enough to trash one
of the largest and most reputable
organizations at Texas A&M.
Stidvent is wrong to generalize
those involved with Fish Camp
into beer-drinking, erotic-seeking
hypocrites. Many of the most
powerful student leaders at
Texas A&M have served as Fish
Camp counselors, chairpeople
Shannon Halbrook’s column
(Jan. 25) made a few good points,
but generally portrayed Christian
music in a negative light.
What separates a Christian
song from a secular song is the
lyrics and the spirit, or intent, of
the group. We are the ones who
have classified music into pop,
country, alternative, etc. We are
the ones who twisted music
around over the past 2,000 years,
creating a wall that divided the
way Christian and secular music
is “supposed” to sound.
As for Christian artists who
have stumbled and made mis
takes, Christians aren’t perfect.
Yes, there is a small minority
who don’t live the life they sing
about and put their money first.
So, Jimmy Swaggart-types
aside, the Christian music min
istry is reaching more people
than ever.
