Cowboys get big welcome in Tempe

Deion Sanders, Michael Irvin and Kevin Williams hope to do plenty of celebrating in the end
zone at Sunday's Super Bowl XXX in Tempe, AZ.

□ Hundreds of cheering fans
greeted the Dallas team at the
airport Monday.
TEMF’E, Ariz. (AP) — Maybe the Dallas
Cowboys have taken this America’s Team
stuff too far.
When they arrived in Arizona for the Super
Bowl, they were greeted by hundreds of fans
at the airport — in a town that has another
NFL team, a division rival, no less.
At their first news conference of the week,
a prime topic was their popularity throughout
the nation, the world. Even before the Pitts
burgh Steelers, their foes in Sunday’s title
game, had shown up Monday night, it seemed
as if the AFC champions were forgotten.
“You’ve even got true blue Cowboys fans
up East,” said safety Bill Bates. “You know
they’ve got to be severe, hard-core fans to
live up there with the Eagles and the Gi
ants. They have to really love you, and that
means a lot to us.”
It also puts more stress on being a Cow
boy; the players have to deal with far more
attention, at home and on the road, than
most teams.
“It says a lot about the character of our
team,” said Emmitt Smith, the man the Steel
ers must neutralize to have a chance for the
championship. “It’s hard to stay focused.
Everybody’s got their opinion. It’s easier to
jump off the bandwagon.”
Adds Troy Aikman, who carries a 9-2
playoff record into his third Super Bowl,
“It’s mind-boggling that so many people
are interested.”
It shouldn’t be surprising, considering how
well marketed the Cowboys are. Owner Jerry
Jones claims they are second in merchandise
sold in every NFL city.

the 400 hurdles at the SWC’s with a time of
1:00.81.
At the NCAA Championships, she fin
ished second in her preliminary heat with a
time of 13.47, which qualified her for the
semifinals where she ran a 13.63, good
enough for a sixth-place finish.
At the SWC indoor meet, she won her
preliminary heat in the 55 hurdles with a
time of 8.05, but did not advance to the fi
nals after posting a 8.48 in the semifinals.
What motivates Kirkland to run?
“My mom is my motivator,” Kirkland
said. “Ever since I started running, she has
been my motivation.”
Brown said the maternal influence is
very evident in Kirkland’s style on and off
the track..
“She’s from a good background,” Brown
said. “Her mother is very supportive. An-
janette is one of those elite individuals
who wants to succeed and make contribu
tions to society.”
She will have a big opportunity to con
tribute to society when she runs in the
Olympic Trials in June. She will be run
ning the 100 hurdles in hopes of qualifying
for the Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta
in August and September.
Brown said that in order for Kirkland to
qualify, she will probably have to run a 12.6
or a 12.7. Her best wind-aided time is 12.89.
Kirkland got off to a great start for the
1996 season, winning the 55 hurdle event at
Saturday’s Sooner Invitational Relays at the
Myriad Convention Center in Oklahoma City.
After the race, Brown said Kirkland’s
greatest ability is her desire.
“You’ve got to have a special talent and
gift, and Anjanette has it,” Brown said. “We’re
proud to have her in our program.”
□ The new Charlotte Hornets
point guard has been unable to
suit up because of medical tests
being done on other players.
FORT MILL, S.C. (AP) — Would-be
Charlotte Hornet Kenny Anderson
spent day No. 3 in trade limbo Monday,
trying to get as close as he can to a team
that’s still not allowed to officially em
brace him.
“It’s a Catch-22 situation, but I’ve got
good vibes about this,” Anderson said
after he was reduced to the role of a by
stander during the Hornets’ practice.
Charlotte acquired Anderson from
the New Jersey Nets in a four-player
trade Friday. The Hornets, eager to fill
a void at point guard, had planned to
start Anderson in Saturday night’s
home game against Golden State.
But 45 minutes before the contest,
word came down from New Jersey that
the Nets wanted to run more tests on
Khalid Reeves, one of the players they
got in the deal. Reeves sprained his left
ankle on Dec. 11, and New Jersey wants
to make sure there’s no significant dam
age in the joint.
The Nets have been given until Tues
day afternoon to complete their tests.
Until then, all four players are barred
from playing or practicing with their
new teams.
The Hornets had Sunday off, but
when they went through a 90-minute
workout Monday, Anderson and reserve
guard Gerald Glass, the other player
the Nets sent to Charlotte, had to stay
on the sidelines.
They could dress like Hornets in the
team’s standard practice attire.
They could speak with their would-be
Hornet teammates.
They could use the Hornets’ exercise ,
equipment. /
They just couldn’t go out on eitherof
the teal and purple courts and take parti
in the drills at the team’s practice com
plex facility.
“I’m just waiting, just waiting it out
and working out,” Anderson said. “I’m
doing the treadmill, doing the bike.
Hopefully, it will all work out for
the best.”
While he passes the time, Anderson
fights thoughts that the deal might not
go through, a scenario that is not with
out precedent in the NBA. Anderson re
members the February 1994 attempted
trade of Detroit’s Sean Elliott to Hous
ton for Robert Horry and Matt Bullard,
a deal that was rescinded after Elliott
failed his physical.

Care Plus offers an easy way
to have beautiful teeth
F or anyone interested in improving
their appearance quickly and easily,
listen up. Personally, while here at
A&M, my teeth are something I
have unfortunately ignored, other than
the usual brushing and Listerine. I avoid
College Station water at all costs, I do not
drink much coffee, and I quit smoking
cigarettes after I found out it was bad for
your lungs. Yet I knew my teeth could
be whiter I didn’t know what to do, so I
called Dr.. Neal Kruger of Care Plus
Clinics and he had the solution to make
my pearly whites tmly white.
I looked into having my teeth whitened
after hearing some promising testimony
from friends. Cecilia Felderhoff, Class of
1988, says, “One of my best friends dads
is a dentist, and her teeth were’the
prettiest I have ever seen. I wanted teeth
like hers, so I had my teedi worked on by
Dr. Kruger. It really was so easy, and my
teeth look so much better.” I made an
appointment. Here’s what happened:
Paid Advertisement
1. Dr. Kruger explained how the
Whitening Program works, and how you
can have your top teeth whitened,
bottom teeth whitened, or both.
2. Your teeth are modeled for the fitted
tray you wear when you sleep, study, or
whatever you want to do for a couple of
hours.
3. You wear die tray when you fed like
it for the next two weeks.
Although I was initially hesitant, the
process itself is simple, and the results are
awesome. My teedi have not been this
white since I was in kindeigarten, and it
costs much less than you would guess
Also, don’t waste your cash on the “store-
bought” whitening systems. The results
do not compare to professional care.
