Hill, Pistons
drive past Spurs
□ David Robinson
scored 37 points in a
losing cause.
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP)
— Grant Hill’s driving layup with
17 seconds to play gave the De
troit Pistons a 100-98 victory over
the San Antonio Spurs on Thurs
day night.
Hill drove past David Robin
son to hit the tiebreaking layup,
and Chuck Person missed a 3-
pointer with one
second to go.
San Antonio
played without for
mer Piston Sean El
liott, who averages
23 points but was
sidelined with a
sprained foot, and
saw their five-game winning
streak come to an end. Detroit
won its fifth in a row at home.
Allan Houston led the Pistons
with 28 points, while Otis Thorpe
had 25 and Hill had 19 points,
eight rebounds and eight assists.
David Robinson had 37 for the
Spurs, and Vinny Del Negro
added 18.
The Pistons got within one,
80-79, with 8:54 to go, but Doc
Rivers hit a 3-pointer, Robin
son blocked Mark West’s shot
and Cory Alexander hit a run
ning jumper to make it a six-
point game.
But Detroit scored the next six
to tie it, and after Thorpe’s finger
^BAM ANTONIO
roll with 4:30 to go, the Pistons
led 92-89.
Robinson then hit free throws
to tie it back up. It was still tied
with 1:50 to go, but Hill put De
troit ahead with a dunk, and Per
son missed a jumper.
Houston missed a shot on the
other end, and Robinson retied it
at 98 with a 16-footer, but he
couldn’t stop Hill’s drive.
The Spurs led 55-50 at half
time, but two baskets by Thorpe
capped a 11-3 Pistons run that
put Detroit ahead 67-66 late in
the third period.
Robinson took
over at that
point, scoring
two baskets and
setting up anoth
er as San Anto
nio pulled back
ahead by 74-69
with 12 minutes to play.
Only three Spurs scored in the
first quarter, and Del Negro was
the only one to score in a span of
almost nine minutes, but that
was enough to give San Antonio a
26-19 lead.
Del Negro outscored the Pis
tons 14-13 during the middle of
the quarter, and Robinson’s
three-point play and Johnson’s 3-
pointer finished a 12-2 run.
Houston had six points in De
troit’s 8-2 run to start the second,
but San Antonio scored the next
six to restore the seven-point
lead, and the Pistons were still
ahead by five at halftime.

Thursday night.
HOUSTON (AP) — Dino
Radja scored 23 points and
Boston’s sharpshooters took
over in the fourth quarter as
the Celtics overcame a sea-
son-high 51 points by Ha
keem Olajuwon for a 108-106
victory over the Rockets on
Thursday night.
It took the Rockets a half
to adjust to playing without
three injured players, includ
ing swingman Mario Elie,
and they trailed 67-54 at the
half as Boston hit 60 percent
from the field.
The Rockets almost pulled
it off, taking a 100-98 lead
with 4:45 left, but the Celtics
hit clutch outside shots.
Dee Brown’s two free
throws with 30 seconds left
gave Boston the final 108-106
lead.
It snapped Houston’s
three-game winning streak.
Olajuwon, who narrowly
missed his career high of 52
points, played a masterful
game, but he missed the final
shot of the game that could
have forced overtime with 2.1
seconds left.
Olajuwon had 14 rebounds
and was 11-of-14 at the free
throw line.
Brown had 14 points off
the bench, six in the fourth
quarter, and Rick Fox fin
ished with 16 points.
Olajuwon made the first
eight points of the third quar
ter sparking a 12-0 run that
cut Boston’s lead to 67-66
with 8:59 left in the period.
Boston fought off that
charge and regained a 79-71
lead before

The Rock

nine players
in uniform because of injuries
to Elie, out for at least six
weeks after undergoing
surgery on his broken wrist
earlier in the day, and Robert
Horry and top reserve Sam
Cassell.
Tim Breaux started in
place of Elie. Cassell (shoul
der) and Horry (tendinitis)
also missed the game for the
Rockets.

Buckalo has also helped put
