“At most schools, they don’t need to dis
tribute flyers or do radio advertisements
just to get the word out,” he said.
However, Lanita Hanson, Texas A&M’s
coordinator of Greek affairs and assistant di
rector of student activities, said the Greek
system continues to grow in numbers and
chapters at A&M, while other uni
versities are seeing a decline in
membership.
Hanson said the A&M Greek
system is different from systems
on other campuses because it is
only 20 years old.
“It is slowly defining itself and
creating an identity,” she said
ing, Hanson said, most people can find fra
ternities that fit their expectations.

“We provide full access to a
variety of resources available
for students,” he said. “But it
is the students’ responsibility
to take advantage of the
things that will enhance their
education.”
Among the public access
computer labs on campus fund
ed in part by student fees are
the Remote Computing Center
in the Read Building and com
puter labs in the Blocker Build
ing, the Teague Building, the
West Campus Library and the
Biochemistry/Biophysics Build
ing. And more computer ser
vices are being added.
A ground-breaking ceremo
ny for a 24-hour, 600-seat facil
ity located between the Pavil
ion and the Heep Building will
be held this semester.
Dinkel said the facility will
have a phenomenal impact on
current computing facilities.
“The new public access cen
ter will become the centerpiece
for facilities on campus,” he
said. “One of our biggest prob
lems has been a lack of space,
not equipment. So that’s why a
600-seat computer lab will be
an excellent addition.”
The new center will cost $4
million to build and will be
stocked with $1 million worth
of equipment. The project will
be funded partially by student
computer fees.
The new center will more
than double the amount of pub
lic access computers at A&M.

course ... ,” Reed said.
The Senate will closely ex
amine how and why students
are charged for various fees.
“There is a lot of student
concern about fees right now,
so we will definitely look into
that,” Reed said.
Pierce Cantrell, speaker of
the Faculty Senate, said his
organization will spend consid
erable time investigating the
possibility of increasing the
general use fee.
“The general use fee will prob
ably increase, so we will want to
look at that,” Cantrell said.
The Faculty Senate will
also determine how to follow
up on the Board of Regents’ re
cent call for post-tenure re
view.
Mary Nan West, Board of
Regents chairman, said the re
gents will widen their perspec
tive this semester.
She said she hopes the new
year will bring to fruition
many of the projects the board
has already begun, such as the
Animal Science Teaching and
Research Center.
“I want to finish some of the
projects that have been start
ed,” West said. “After all, the
reason the University was
founded was on account of
agriculture and engineering,
and I don’t want to see the
University lose sight of that.”
Another of West’s priorities
is to increase enrollment in or
der to allow more qualified
students to attend A&M.
