BRIEFS
□ Most of Dr. Ed Hoag's
watercolor paintings
depict Southwestern
landscapes and scenes
of Italy and Mexico.
By Marissa Alanis
The Battalion
What began for Dr. Ed Hoag,
a Texas A&M landscape archi
tecture professor, as a hobby in
watercolor painting, has evolved
into a second profession.
A collection of Hoag’s art
work went on display today at
the Local Color Art Gallery in
College Station and can be
viewed until Feb. 15.
The paintings, all done in wa
tercolor, depict scenes of Italy.
Laurie Belle, Local Color
Gallery program coordinator,
said Hoag’s work has made a
respectable impact in a field
that is difficult to master.
“Watercolor has a mind of
its own,” Belle said. “You have
to know its character, and that
takes years of studying.”
Hoag first discovered his ap
titude for watercolor painting
while studying for his bache
lor’s degree at Michigan State
University.
But it was years later until in
spiration struck him full force.
“When I was teaching at
Oklahoma State University, a
student of mine brought in
his stepfather’s box of paint
ings which he termed
‘scraps,’” he said. “I was
amazed by them.”
As it turned out, the studen
t’s stepfather was an art in
structor, and Hoag began tak
ing lessons from him.
Five years ago, Hoag decided
to seek art gallery exposure for
his work — a decision that
launched his professional career.
A&M food services

Texas A&M's Department of Food
Services is hosting a job fair today from

dents interested in jobs ranging from nu
trition to catering are invited to attend.
Applicants should bring Social Se
curity cards and photo identification,
and managers will be available to con
duct interviews.
Funeral arrangements
planned for freshman
Jennifer Leigh Morton, a Texas A&M
freshman biology major from Pinehurst,
Texas, died Dec. 18 in an automobile
accident. She was 19 years old.
Funeral arrangements for Morton
are being handled by Kline Funeral
Home in Tomball, Texas.

Dr. Ed Hoag hangs a watercolor painting in the Local Color Gallery
for a showing. His artwork will be on display at the gallery until
Feb. 15.
His accomplishments in
clude induction into the West
ern Arts Association and the
Texas Watercolor Society.
Most of his paintings depict
Southwestern landscapes and
scenes from his travels in Italy
and Mexico.
Hoag said he feels success
ful when he can draw people
into his paintings and make
them relate to their themes.
“People can get an emotive
connection with my paintings,”
he said. “Like a good movie or
book, they’ll know its a good
painting if they never get tired
of it and if they can discover
something new every time they
see it.”
Hoag’s work is also on dis
play with that of three other
prominent artists at the Texas
Trails Gallery in San Antonio.
“I feel honored to have my
paintings hung with other
artists who have national rep
utations,” he said. “As an
artist, you are better remem
bered because of the group of
people your paintings are in
cluded with.”
Hoag is collaborating with
his wife, Mary Jane, on a se
ries of quilts done with water-
color-dyed fabrics that will be
displayed on the A&M campus
in April.

Noises from Physical
Plant result of testing
Loud noises emanating from the
Northside of the A&M campus this
week are not gun shots or explo
sions, a Physical Plant spokesperson
said, but newly installed equipmenl
being tested.
A safety release valve opens to re
lieve built-up pressure, producing a stac
cato noise that is magnified by echoes
bouncing off nearby buildings.
The Physical Plant spokesperson
said students should not be alarmed
and are not in danger.
