You’d better be Super Rich 1ST ANNUAL HISPANIC OPEN HOUSE Sec LA .A , 1 , - 4A Monday, Januaiy 22,1996 Rudder Theater 7:00 p.m. Guest Speaker: Dr. Leo Sayavedra, Deputy Chancellor, Texas A&M University System Topic: “Importance of Student Involvement.’ Presented by Hispanic Presidents Council: Ballet Folklorico Celestial (BFC) Committee for the Awareness of Mexican American Culture (CAMAQ Hispanic Business Student Association (HBSA) Hispanic Graduate Student Association (HGSA) Hispanic Journalists Association (HJA) Kappa Delta Chi Sorority Mexican American Engineers and Scientists (MAES) National Hispanic Scholarship Fund (NHSF) Omega Delta Phi Fraternity Puerto Rican Student Association (PRSA) Rio Grande Valley Hometown Club (RGVHC) Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) I t seems every January the one thing everyone has on their minds is the Super Bowl. Not only does a fever spread across the nation at the start of the new year, but it’s almost as if this one game will determine the future for half- a-billion male sports fans who support 100 of the biggest, beefiest men in the NFL. As a result of this Super Bowl fever, wives and children are put on hold, beer parties are planned and loads of mon ey are spent on big-screen TVs, airplane tickets and game tickets. Watching the local news the other night, I learned that this year loyal Cowboy fans and avid Super Bowl attendees will have to spend a lot more money, be a little more persis tent, and know more of the right people if they want to watch up close as Steeler guts are spread across Tempe, Az. on Jan. 28. Just because I say this it does not mean that I’m a die hard Cowboy fan who would kill to attend this game — I wouldn’t. But those of you who would Nicole Smith Sportswriter do anything to watch the Cow boys in actions first-hand are probably going to have to set tle with a great view from the couch. It seems only the cheapest and worst tickets, which- are going for $350, are being sold to the average ticket buyer, while all of the good seats are being bought up by large cor porations and businesses. We all know that the NFL needs to make its money — that is why tickets cost so much. However, unless you are willing to fork over your entire life savings on a football game, your chances of getting a good Super Bowl ticket are slim to none. It’s a little ridiculous that one football game that lasts three-and-a-half hours can cost over $2,000 for one person. Let’s be honest, everybody who’s anybody already knows that the Cowboys are big fa vorites to win. So why don’t sports fans cop a squat three feet from the TV, and leave the 20-yard line end zone tickets to those who want a bad view of the game? Whether you are there or not, the game will still go on, so we should all save our mon ey for next year and hope that the real sports fan can actual ly get a good seat for a reason able price for Super Bowl XXXI. Who knows? Maybe it would make everybody feel better knowing that a bunch of AT&T and IBM executives will be enjoying 50-yard line seats on the second row. At least all of us at home have that advantage of being able to catch the post-game ac tion with Jimmy Johnson and Howie Long. Sound fair enough, I guess. So while money is buying happiness for a few people, the rest of us are stuck looking forward to passing the pretzels and beer nuts to the fat guy across the room. His mom says not so fast. “I will be talking with my boy,” Pearl Irvin said from her home in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. “I don’t need to tell you he didn’t learn to speak that way in this house.” Pearl Irvin chuckled softly through much of the Thursday morning conversation. That means her son, better known as the Dal las Cowboys’ 29-year-old perennial Pro Bowl receiver, probably will avoid a spanking. But she said occa sions in recent days. Irvin first created an up roar last week end while ad dressing a Texas Stadium crowd and a live national television audi ence during presentation of the NFC cham pionship trophy. In defending be leaguered coach Barry Switzer, he let slip a four-letter word. Given a Irvin chance to apologize Wednesday, Irvin instead faced the battery of TV cameras at the Cowboys Valley Ranch training facility and repeat ed the same word five times. He then defied anyone to stop him from expressing himself in any manner he chooses. His mom planned to take up the gauntlet. “I almost fell through the floor the first time he said it,” Pearl Irvin recalled. “I have never in my life heard Michael talk that way. “He told me, ‘Mama, I’m sorry.’ And I said, ‘Michael, you know that’s no way to talk, especially not when your speaking in public. And especially when you’ve got a little brother coming up who listens to everything you say. You wouldn’t want him speaking like that.’ ence title this year. Nelson is not the onlyoiijnd from who feels the Aggies have ask at the SWC crown. Junior 55-meter hurdler La ry Wade said A&M has the let? of talent where every Aggie con petitor has a fair shot of wimiif every time they line up. “If we keep our heads er, come out as a team am everyone takes care of business, then we should be able to vm the SWC,” Wade said. A major strength for the k gies this weekend and forth! season is senior 55-m hurdler Anjanette Kirkland. Kirkland said that sheis ready to test her feet this week end so that she can makeherfi nal adjustments for the SWf season. Although not looking past this meet, the Aggies are truly looking forward to the SWC meets because of the end of the conference. “Since Coach Nelson and Coach (Abe) Brown have never won the SWC, this is our las! chance,” Wade said. “Wenot only want to win the title (or ourselves, but primarily for our coaches.” Pam Bern eBattalk Student 1 ilahoma, kansas i * -<4- -9 c>* r <2> DANCE Beg C & W Dance Ballroom Dance Wed.
