Phone: 845-2611 Aggieland Page 8 • The Battalion Hart Continued from page 7 Coach Tony Barone said with improvement, Hart could devel op into an even more complete offensive threat. “He’s had a typical adjust ment from junior college,” Barone said. “He’s played much better defensively than we thought he would and he’s played with great intensity. “He’s finding it more difficult to get shots off at this level, but with development, production will come later.” Outstanding offensive pro duction is how Hart made a name for himself in junior col lege. He earned first-team, all conference honors his sopho more year, averaging 23.5 points, 7.6 assists and 3.1 steals, Hart also made 140 three-point ers, 43 more than A&M made as a team last season. Hart said A&M’s reluctance to shoot from behind the arc in the past wasn’t an issue in deciding to transfer to College Station. “They recruited me to shoot the ball and play defense, so that wasn’t a fear coming in,” Hart said. “There’s really no pressure on me either, because Tracey (Anderson) and Kyle (Kessel) can shoot well, too.” Hart, who is originally from Dallas, said A&M’s location and future move into the Big 12 Conference were also key factors in his decision. “I wanted to come back close to home and my parents and I liked the academic reputation (at A&M),” Hart said. “Also, I love competition and nearly everyone in the Big 12 is nation ally ranked. If we can compete against those teams, then we can get some publicity and recognition.” Despite his relatively smooth transition to Division I basket ball, the 5-foot 8-inch Hart said the game is a lot different. “It’s more physical, and they apply a lot more pressure by sticking more bodies on you,” Hart said. “The guards I face are a lot bigger at this level.” Barone said Hart has helped A&M out this season in more ways than one. “We’ve moved him around and he’s been pretty solid in dif ferent positions,” Barone said, “He’s played the point, but he’s more confident at off-guard He just needs to develop further when to pick shots and how to get open for them.” With a little seasoning and a little superstitious luck, the fu ture could be a bright one for Hart. And just remember, he’s not crazy. Branch The Ba' Thursday January 18, A&I earn P ride is lar wo: arounc parts. Peopl A&M from t nation to tai this intense called the S Aggieland. I’m just doing what I’m supposed to do.” Branch’s use of her tremen dous quickness and agility to find the open teammate causes nightmares for A&M opponents, Her quick first step and crossover move beat most de fenders, allowing Branch to slice into the lane to score or dish the ball off. Texas A&M senior center An gel Spinks sees Branch’s ability to consistently drive into the mid dle of the opposing, defense as the key to the Lady Aggies’ offense. “She’s most dangerous when she drives the lane,” Spinks said. “If she has the shot she can take it, or, if someone comes up to stop her, she can pass off to one of us for any easy shot.” This year, Branch has been particularly dangerous. She leads the Lady Aggies in scor ing at 16.5 points per game. In addition, she is pouring in 7.9 assist per game and has even averaged an astonishing 4.5 re bounds per game. A starter since the first game of her freshman season, leader ship is plus Branch brings to the court each game. Spinks says this asset is something the Lady Ag gie rely on in pressure situations. “We really do look for Lisa a lot of the time for the big basket when we need it,” Spinks said. “She’s a leader on this team be cause of how hard she works and the way she takes care of her business on and off the court.” Branch believes that what sets her apart, above anything else, is her intense desire to win else and her competitive spirit. “I’m a born competitor — it’s really not something I can ex plain,” Branch said. “I’ve just al ways been competitive in what ever I’m doing.
