Already dreaming of a Big 12 championship
F or me, the Christmas
break was a good one. I
got exactly what I wanted.
The Aggies finally won a
bowl game, solidly defeating
a top-notch Michigan team.
Corey Pullig played like I
knew he was capable of play
ing — allowing me the oppor
tunity to back up some of my
reasons for being a Corey Phrllig fan. The
Cowboys are going to the Superbowl, and
even better, t.u. lost their bowl game.
I could have done without Leeland
McElroy’s decision to go pro, but besides
that, Santa was good to me.
However, the more I think about and
come to terms with McElroy’s departure,
the more I see that even if the team is
'Lectric Leeland-less, next year’s football
team could be one of the best that Aggie
fans have seen in quite sometime.
It’s no secret that the Aggies are a
young team, and those youngsters could
be the key to a successful showing in the
Big 12 — one that might prove the critics
who think they don’t have a chance
against quality teams wrong.
True freshmen like Sirr Parker, D’An-
dre Hardeman and Eric Bernard stepped
up and made an immediate impact for the
Aggies as running backs. McElroy is good,
but these three guys together can do just
as well.
Looking at the season statistics, McEl
roy carried the ball a total of 246 times
and posted 1,122 total
yards, averaging 4.6 yards
per carry. Parker, Harde
man and Bernard together
carried the ball 146 times
for 650 yards averaging 4.8
yards per carry. They can
move the ball just as well,
and in San Antonio, they
showed the Aggie fans that
they do not need McElroy to win.
True, A&M is losing integral parts of both
the offense and defense. Besides McElroy, of
fensively they’ll be losing Detron Smith, Chris
Sanders, Hayward Clay and Corey Pullig. De
fensively, Reggie Brown, Ray Mickens and
Dennis Allen will be leaving the ranks of the
Wrecking Crew.
These guys will be missed, but the Ag
gie team will not be hurting much in their
absence. Guys like Parker and Hardeman,
Albert Connell and Donte Hawkins will
fill these voids, and veterans like Calvin
Collins will continue to make big plays.
On defense A&M still has Larry Walker
II, Trent Driver, Donovan Greer, Keith
Mitchell, Dat Nguyen and Toya Jones.
Then there’s the much-talked about
quarterback job. Branndon Stewart and
Kevin Colon are supposed to compete for
the starting job. Either way, the Aggies
will be in good hands.
Sure, with the move to the Big 12, it’s going
to be a tough season for the Aggies, but noth
ing they can’t handle. The season starts out
pretty easy for the Aggies. They start out play
ing the University of Southern Louisianian
Lafayette and then face the University of
North Texas and Louisiana Tech at home. I
am going to go ahead and predict three wins
to start the season.
Then will come the much-awaited game
against the University of Colorado. A&M
should have beaten them this season on their
own turf, but now the Buffaloes must travel to
infamous Kyle Field where the Aggies never
— well almost never — lose. We’ll go ahead
and predict another win.
The Aggies will then travel to face Iowa
State. This could prove to be one of the
more difficult games on the Aggie sched
ule, one that cannot be overlooked but
still seems attainable.
A return to Kyle Field means dates
with Kansas State and Texas Tech. Two
more tough games for the Aggies, but also
two more wins. Again Kyle Field and the
revenge factor will pull the maroon-and-
white through.
Oklahoma State and Baylor, on the
road and Oklahoma here will give the Ag
gies three more wins going into their fi
nal game of the regular season — the
Texas game.
They’re playing the Longhorns at
Austin, but the 1995 loss will be fresh on
their minds. With revenge once again a
driving force, the Aggies should pick up
another win — giving them an 11-0 sea
son and putting them in the Big 12 cham
pionship.
Even without McElroy.
