Cash-cow superstars like Sylvester Stallone and Demi Moore fell flat on their cash- padded rears, and high-budget films broke the bank rather than box office records. — By Wes Swift — The Battalion T he top films of 1995 featured top- notch performances backed by solid plots and writing. Flash and sleaze left the big screen, and wit, intrigue and emotion took their place as audiences across the country flocked to more intense, thoughtful films. The Best of 1995 — Presidents, Toys, Crooks and Astronauts The past year was also a time to rediscover the lost sides of humanity. Disney brought us back to our childhood with the dazzling Toy Story, and Winona Ryder and Maya Angelou made How to Make an American Quilt more than just the average “chick flick.” In December, James Earl Jones and Richard Harris portrayed the pain of racism in Cry the Beloved Country with brilliant portrayals of both sides of the color line. The Oscar frenzy started in July when Ron Howard and Tom Hanks went flying high with Apollo 13. Easily the original front-run ner in the “Best Picture” race, the true-life drama of the jinxed space flight faced some stiffer competition later in the year. Oliver Stone threw his hat in the race with Nixon, but Stone may have to be happy with a “Best Actor” award for Anthony Hopkins. Nicole Kidman put on a Oscar-worthy per formance in To Die For as an overly ambitious weather girl, and Emma Thompson wowed critics with her role in Sense and Sensibility. Criminals made out like bandits in the box office this year as well. John Travolta so lidified his comeback as Chili Palmer in Get Shorty, and Kevin Spacey’s wonderfully de ceitful Verbal Kint in The Usual Suspects has him in Oscar contention for “Best Sup porting Actor.” The Best Film of 1995 — Leaving Las Vegas Nicholas Cage and Elizabeth Shue scored Golden Globe nominations for their portray al of the doomed alcoholic and prostitute couple in this Mike Figgis-directed film. Fig gis also scored a best director nomination for Leaving Las Vegas, which was nominated for “Best Drama of the Year.” Cage as Ben, the drunk who comes to Las Vegas to literally drink himself to death, and Shue as Sera, the prostitute who falls in love with him, are uncanny. The story is brutal and real. There are no rabbit punches here — just body blows that knock viewers flat on their backs. Cage makes hairpin turns between comic clumsiness and drunken rage, and he turns in the best performance of the year. Shue is superb as a street-savvy hooker who faces losing love as quickly as she finds it. Looking Into the Future — More of the Same Apollo 13's true life drama competed for "Best Picture." Unfortunately, Leaving Las Vegas has been limited to only small engagements, which may hurt it when the Academy Awards rolls around. The trend toward more steak and less siz zle looks like it will continue into the new year. Films like Georgia and Mr. Holland’s Opus have been marked for Oscar greatness, and the good films do not seem to be stop ping there. The buzz is already strong on Tim Robbins’ Dead Man Walking and the new version of Shakespeare’s Othello. Nevertheless, 1996 will have to be in tip top shape to come close to its predecessor. . 3 Hillary C ides misinl ier remark: WASHING!
