Three-point shot worth scholarship cash
Staff and Wire Reports
Greg Londrie believes it is worth the price
of admission to go to a Texas A&M basket
ball game. Practice your three-point shoot
ing, and maybe you will too.
Londrie, a freshman business adminis
tration major, sank a basket from the top
of the key at G. Rollie White Coliseum dur
ing halftime of the Lady Aggies’ game
against Texas Tech Sunday night. It was
worth $2,000.
Londrie was the first winner of the 12th
Man Foundation’s $1,000 3-point Scholar
ship Shot. At every A&M home conference
game this season, a name will be drawn pri
or to halftime for a student in attendance to
attempt a three-point shot.
If the student is a member of the Student
12th Man Foundation, the scholarship is au
tomatically doubled to $2,000.
Registration for the contest will take
place in the lobby of G. Rollie White Colise
um prior to the opening tip of every home
conference game.
The only rule for the contest is that en
trants must be currently enrolled Texas
A&M students with valid student identifica
tion cards. No Texas A&M athletic team
members, employees of the A&M athletic de
partments or the 12th Man Foundation or
their immediate families are eligible.
If no one wins the scholarship at a men’s
game this season, a drawing will be conduct
ed at the last men’s home conference basket
ball game to award the scholarship.
Since a scholarship was won Sunday dur
ing a women’s game, there will not be a
drawing at the end of the women’s season.

Three ways to
beat the high
cost of college.
1. The Montgomery Cl Bill
2. Student loan repayment
3. Part-time income
The Army Reserve Alternate
Training Program is a smart way to
pay for college.
First, if you qualify, the Mont
gomery GI Bill can provide you with
up to $6,920 for current college ex
penses or approved vo/tech training.
Second, if you have—or obtain—a
qualified student loan not in default,
you may get it paid off at the rate of
15% per year or $500, whichever is
greater, up to a maximum of $10,000.
Selected military skills can double that
maximum.
Third, you can earn part-time
money in college, and here’s how it
works: One summer you take Basic
Training, and the next summer you
receive skill training at an Army
school. You’ll earn over $1,500 for
Basic and even more for skill training.
Then you’ll attend monthly meetings
at an Army Reserve unit near your
college, usually one weekend a month
plus two weeks a year. You’ll be paid
over $105 a weekend to start. It’s
worth thinking about. Give us a call:

Steelers respond to
Cowboys’ bragging
Super Bowl XXX
Jan. 28
□ Many of the Dallas
players and coaches
have downplayed
Pittsburgh's chances.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — The
Pittsburgh Steelers greeted the
Dallas Cowboys’ initial bombast
of Super Bowl braggadocio Mon
day with smiles and snickers —
and a warning.
Their message to Cowboys
wide receiver Michael Irvin was:
Don’t take out a mortgage on
that Super Bowl house just yet.
The Cowboys began talking
trash as soon as they beat Green
Bay 38-27 Sunday in the NFC
championship game, dismissing
the Steelers as just another AFC
pretender to a title won by the
NFC for 11 consecutive seasons.
“We’re not going to the Super
Bowl, we’re going home,” Irvin
said, after making two touch
down catches. “It’s our house.
Last year we just let somebody
borrow it. “Now we’re going to go
check it out, see if it’s dirty.
We’re going home.’ ”
“And you know what we’re go
ing to do when we get there (the
Super Bowl),” Deion Sanders said.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones
also was in a talking mood, as if
that were unusual.
“Nothing against the Steel
ers,” Jones said, “but we are the
better team.”
The Steelers, by contrast,
talked respectfully of the Cow
boys, but showed no outward
trepidation in playing the team
that will be making a record
eighth Super Bowl appearance.
“I don’t know if they’re in
their home,” running back Erric
Pegram said. “They have to earn
that right.”
“We don’t get caught up in
all of that (talk),” receiver An
dre Hastings said. “That’s why
Michael says all that stuff, so
(the media) will put it on TV.
That’s the way it is, we’re en
tertainers.”
The Steelers have an envi
able Super Bowl report card of
their own: 4-0, with two victo
ries over Dallas. But those
1970s-era games came when
most of the current Steelers
were in grade school.
“This team won’t be intimi
dated by anybody,” coach Bill
Cowher said. “... The Cowboys
are (confident), and they have
every reason to be. They’ve
backed up their talk in recent
years. But, at the same time,
we’ve played good football for
the last three months, and we
want to finish it off right. It’s
like I told the team, people don’t
remember the losing team.”
The Steelers don’t have any
trouble remembering the last
time they played the Cowboys, a
26-9 loss last season in coach Bar
ry Switzer’s Dallas debut. Emmitt
Smith ran for 171 yards and a
touchdown in Three Rivers Stadi
um and the Blitzburgh defense
didn’t make a sack.
But that
game was an
afterthought
Monday as the
Steelers’ front
office staff
scurried about
making its Su
per Bowl
plans, and the
players ad
mired a 500-
pound cake
that a bakery
whipped up to celebrate their
AFC championship. The cake was
displayed prominently in the
Steelers’ lobby, and Cowher play
fully told several of his oversized
linemen not to dare sample it.
The Steelers also began learn
ing just how few people, even
outside of Dallas, consider them
a legitimate threat to the Cow
boys’ third Super Bowl champi
onship in four seasons.
The latest line: the Steelers
are 11 1/2-12 point underdogs.
“Twelve points? Already?” Pe
gram said. “That’s just another
challenge to us. The truth is, it’s
the best team on game day that
wins. It’s the Super Bowl, but
it’s still a game.”
It’s also a game that, for tAe
first time in their five trips there,
the Steelers aren’t favored to win.
Still, they talked as if that
would be to their advantage, as
the nation focuses its attention
again on Deion, Troy, Emmitt
and the Jimmy Johnson-less
Cowboys and basically ignores
the Steelers.
“We haven’t played our best
game yet,” Cowher said."... If we
ever put our best game together,
it will be a show. We have one
game left to do it.”

Jordan has Bullets firing
blanks in 116-109 win
□ The All-Pro guard
scored 46 points, his
second consecutive
45+ point night.
LANDOVER, Md. (AP) —
Michael Jordan scored 19 of his
46 points in
the fourth
quarter as the
Chicago Bulls
won their
eighth
straight Mon
day, 116-109
over the short-
handed Wash
ington Bullets.
Chicago
trailed after
three quarters
before rallying behind Jordan,
who had his second straight 40-
plus game. He scored 48 Satur
day in Philadelphia.
Scottie Pippen scored 27
points and Dennis Rodman had
15 rebounds for the Bulls, who
improved to 31-3 with their 21st
win in 22 games. The only other
teams in NBA history to start
31-3 were the 1971-72 Los Ange
les Lakers and the 1966-67
Philadelphia 76ers. The ’71-72
Lakers set a league record with
69 victories.
Brent Price scored a career-
high 30 for the Bullets, who
dressed only 10 players because
Chris Webber, Calbert Cheaney,
Robert Pack and Mark Price
were all sidelined with injuries.
Gheorghe Muresan had 27
points and 11 rebounds for the
Bullets and Rasheed Wallace
scored 17. Juwan Howard had
15 points but missed 13 of 17
field goal attempts.

Continued from page 9
“Just imagine it,” he would say, “The money. The endorsements.
No school work to mess with. No maniac following me around all
the time.” I remembered shrugging all of this off. You know how
guys are, I just thought he was trying to make me jealous. Blinded
by love, I didn’t see the obvious.
I realize now that I should have done something. I should have
tried drugs or gunpoint, anything to keep Leeland at A&M. I failed
myself and my university. Needless to say, it took some time to get
myself back together. However, I’m proud to say that I’m back on
track toward mental health and ready to re-enter society.
I have made one vow, though. As long as Leeland McElroy is alive
and playing football, I’ll be near him. I’ve decided my love is some
thing that can’t be thrown away. Not even by Leeland McElroy.
You think Glenn Close was nuts in Fatal Attraction? You ain’t
seen nothin’ yet.
Editor’s note: Not all of the events mentioned in the previous col
umn actually happened.
