It was the best of games, yet strangely enough, it was the worst of games. The Virtual Aggies, the No. 2 team in the nation, marched into Sun Devil Stadium Thursday af ternoon and defeated the No. 1 Nebraska Cornhuskers in a clas sic matchup. That’s the good news. The bad part was that the game was played under highly suspect circumstances. A work ers’ strike saw all stadium per sonnel and officials boycott the game, forcing the Aggies and Cornhuskers to use officials from their own universities to plug in the holes. The result, a game that lasted 6-and-1/2 hours and was won by the Aggies, 136-113. Obviously, records that had stood forever were broken, but in the end, the Maroon and White had its first championship since 1939. ’ . Sports Information Director Alan Cannon was named umpire for the game, while Nebraska SID personnel were made the field and side fudges. Honorary team captains John David Crow and Mike Rozier were jointly put in charge of working the game and play clocks — and the two bickered throughout the game, eventually having to be separated by play ers from their respective alma maters. However, the real battle, as always, was on the field. And the Aggies proved they had the best talent in the country — just like everyone had figured in the pre season. In this rarest of shootouts, A&M had to dig deep into its cavernous offensive arsenal, us ing every weapon possible to combat Tom Osborne’s defending national champions. Senior quarterback Corey Pullig, as usual, was the steady hand for the Aggies, throwing for an almost-obscene 1,098 yards and connectinr on 13 touchdown passes. Eleven of those tr^hdowns went to the stunnip speedster Danny McCray, w 1 ’ caught 21 passes for 708 y r( * 8 - All day long, the Corah u'** 61 ’ 8 never had an answer for J^Cray, who is merely a junhr inis season. When tfc Angies were not ex posing owraishts in the Nebras ka secondary- they were tearing holes jn the suddenly porous Corahusker front four. Inland McElroy, perhaps the greatest player of all time in Sega Football, capped his Heis- man Trophy season with the sin gle-greatest rushing perfor mance of all time. McElroy rushed 42 times for 572 yards, a 13.6 yards-per-car- ry average, and scored four touchdowns. Despite Pullig and McCray’s magnificence, McElroy was named Most Valuable Player of the Fiesta Bowl, for it was he that dug the Aggies out of an early 14-0 hole. Special thanks to David Winder for the use of his Sega. Stew Milne, The Battalion Texas A&M defenders David Maxwell and Donovan Greer celebrate the final gun as the Virtual Ags defeat Nebraska at the Cyber-Fiesta Bowl. wm ' ii,, Reasons To Sell Your Books at Rother's Bookstores Fast & Friendly Service Leaves More Time For Important Stuff Like Studying.
