SAN ANTONIO (AP) —
David Robinson scored 33
points and grabbed 11 rebounds
to lead the San Antonio Spurs
to a 105-86 victory over the Los
Angeles Clippers on Wednesday
at the Alamodome.
Chuck Person, starting for
the injured Sean Elliott, added
22 points, including six 3-point
ers. Elliott sat out the game with
tendinitis in his Achilles’ tendon.
The Spurs broke open a close
game with a 13-3 run in
the last three minutes of the
third quarter for an 80-67 ad
vantage. Robinson had six
points in the run.
Loy Vaught led the Clippers
with 15 points, but he had only
three in the second half. Terry
Dehere, Rodney Rogers and La-
mond Murray each added 14 for
the Clippers, who fell to 7-8.
San Antonio, which beat Los
Angeles for the second time in
four days, is 8-5.
Person tied a Spurs team
record with five 3-pointers in the
first half as San Antonio took a
53-49 lead. He hit three in the
last two minutes of the first
quarter, then added two more
early in the second period.
The Spurs led by as many as
12 points in the second quarter,
44-32 with 5:30 left. But San An
tonio went almost six minutes
without a point from the field,
and the Clippers got back into
the game with six points from
Vaught and a pair of dunks from
Charles Outlaw.

Miami pulls out of bowl race
□ Miami hopes they will be eligible to
compete in next year's postseason.
BOSTON (AP) — The University of Miami
will pull its football team from bowl considera
tion in hopes of avoiding NCAA sanctions that
could keep them out of postseason play next
year, The Boston Globe reported today.
The newspaper, citing unidentified sources,
said a decision could be announced by Friday.
If Miami waits until bowl pairings are an
nounced this weekend, the Big East co-champion
would be forced to commit to a game.
“It’s something we’re considering,” Miami ath
letic director Paul Dee told the Globe. “But we
still are optimistic that the NCAA may inform us
of their decision in the next few days.”
Miami is expected to receive an invitation to
the Orange, Gator or Carquest bowls. An Orange
Bowl game against Notre Dame could make the
school as much as $3 million profit. But some
school officials believe next year’s team will be
much better than this season’s, which is 8-3.
Dropping out of consideration
this season would benefit Vir
ginia Tech, the other Big East
co-champion at 9-2, which risked
losing a major bowl to Miami.
Last month, Miami was
charged with 10 rules violations
following a four-year NCAA investigation.
The Hurricanes were the premiere team of the
1980s — winning three national championships.

US and Russia in Davis Cup final
□ Andre Agassi will
not play because of a
chest injury.
I MOSCOW (AP) — Andre
; Agassi’s withdrawal may force
; world No. 1 Pete Sampras to
(play both singles and doubles
; in the Davis Cup finals against
Russia, U.S. captain Tom Gul-
liks.on said Wednesday.
Sampras had hoped to play
: only doubles, leaving the sin
gles to No. 2 Agassi and and No.
(8 Jim Courier as he teamed
with Todd Martin in doubles.
Agassi pulled out Tuesday
because of a nagging strained
muscle he first suffered in
the Davis Cup semifinal Sep
tember against Sweden. He ag
gravated the injury at a
tournament in Essen, Ger
many, last month and has not
played since.
“There are several different
options we have, but I told
Pete it could come down to him
in singles and doubles,” Gul-
likson said.
Gullikson said he would
submit Sampras and Courier
as his singles players in
Thursday’s draw with Martin
and Richey Reneberg in dou- i
hies. Reneberg was added i
Tuesday in Agassi’s place,
“We could change the dou- I
bios and add him (Sampras) if :
we had to,” Gullikson said.
The Russians, seeking the i
first Davis Cup championship, ;
are expected to put No. 6 ;
Yevgeny Kafelnikov and clay-
court specialist Andrei Ches-
nokov in singles.
“Since I’m going to play sin
gles, 1 would prefer not to play ;
doubles,” Sampras said. “If 1 ;
have one day of rest between ;
the two singles, physically I’ll i
feel better.”
