HOUSTON (AP) — Hakeem
Olajuwon retained his mastery
over the Los Angeles Clippers
with 30 points and 19 rebounds
Tuesday night and the Houston
Rockets put down a late rally for
a 116-103 victory.
Olajuwon averaged 30 points
and 71 percent from the field in
three games against the Clip
pers last season, and he kept
that pace in the first meeting of
this season, hitting all of his
eight free throw and ll-of-19
from the field.
The victory snapped a two-
game losing streak and gave the
Rockets a perfect 5-0 home
record this season.
The Clippers played it close
in the first half, trailing 58-50 at
intermission. But the Rockets
slowly took control and built a
comfortable 100-84 lead with
7:28 left in the game.
Clippers reserve forward
Charles Outlaw scored six
points during an 11-0 charge
that cut the Rockets’ lead to
100-95 with 4:10 left in the
game. But Olajuwon broke the
Houston scoreless streak with
3:59 remaining and the Rockets
reasserted themselves.
Clyde Drexler added 27
points for the Rockets, while Loy
Vaught paced the Clippers with
18 points and 10 rebounds.
Houston threatened to run
away from the Clippers in the
first half with a 26-10 lead near
the end of the first quarter, but
the Clippers went on an 18-6
second-quarter run and tied it at
42 with 3:51 left in the half.
Drexler helped the Rockets
regain the lead with eight
straight points that included a
pair of 3-pointers.
The Rockets had only three
offensive rebounds in a Monday
night loss against Detroit, but
they had 20 against the Clippers
and won the rebounding battle
53-41.

son-high 38 points.
MIAMI (AP) — Alonzo
Mourning scored a season-high
38 points and pulled down 10 re
bounds to lead the Miami Heat
to its second straight come-from-
behind victory, 111-89 over the
Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday
night.
Dallas, which began a six-

game road trip, lost its sixth
straight. The Heat came back
from a seven-point halftime
deficit to beat Vancouver 111-91
on Saturday.
Miami, off to its best start
ever at 8-3, has beaten Dallas
eight consecutive times. The
Mavericks had 22 turnovers,
and Miami converted them into
31 points.
Mourning’s 4-foot hook shot
at 5:02 of the third period gave
the Heat its first lead since ear
ly in the first quarter at 68-67.
Bimbo Coles then stripped the
ball from Dallas’ Jamal Mash-
burn and ran downcourt fora
layup, starting a 16-5 run.
It was Mourning’s strongest
performance for the Heat, who
acquired the center from Char
lotte in a six-man deal just be
fore the season began. In the
fourth quarter as Miami pulled
away.
Mourning was laughing out
loud as even his most off-bal
ance shots went in the basket.
He received a standing ova
tion from the crowd when he sat
down with 3:38 left and the
Heat ahead, 104-84.
While most of his teammates
struggled during the first half,
Mourning kept Miami in the
game with 18 points.
